Teams aplenty, but no quick fix for economy<\/p>\n

After already having establishing several teams to seek
\nsolutions to the country's economic woes, the government is now
\nplanning to set up even more teams next year for similar
\npurposes.<\/p>\n
The plan was unveiled on Wednesday by Coordinating Minister
\nfor Economic Affairs Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti during a hearing
\nwith the House of Representatives' Commission V for industry,
\ninvestment and trade.<\/p>\n
\"The decision to set up the new teams was made during the
\nCabinet meeting on Monday,\" Dorodjatun said.<\/p>\n
He was accompanied by finance minister Boediono, agriculture
\nminister Bungaran Saragih, Minister of Trade and Industry Rini M.
\nSoewandi, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo
\nYusgiantoro, Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) chairman Theo
\nF. Toemion and top officials from the labor ministry and maritime
\nand fisheries ministry.<\/p>\n
The new teams would include a National Investment Team and a
\nNational Exports Promotion Team.<\/p>\n
\"The establishment of these teams is aimed at helping boost
\nthe country's exports and providing protection for investment
\nhere,\" Dorodjatun explained.<\/p>\n
The interdepartmental teams, which will be accountable to the
\nPresident, will comprise all Cabinet members with Dorodjatun
\nacting as coordinator.<\/p>\n
\"This is line with the government's plan to declare 2003 as
\nIndonesian Investment Year,\" Dorodjatun said.<\/p>\n
Besides these two new teams, the government would also set up
\na special team to study the possibility of providing tax
\nincentives, including tax holidays, for investors.<\/p>\n
In addition, the government would set up a Pre-shipment
\nInspection Team tasked with studying the possibility of
\nimplementing the pre-shipment inspection of imported goods.<\/p>\n
So far this year, the government has formed at least two
\ninterministerial teams to handle various problems in the economic
\nsector.<\/p>\n
Last February, it set up an antismuggling team, chaired by
\nDorodjatun, comprising several ministers, the police chief and
\nthe military commander, to crack down on the rampant smuggling
\nthat has hurt local industry and caused massive financial losses
\nfor the government.<\/p>\n
But, thus far, the results of the team's work remain unclear.<\/p>\n
Last July, the government established another team to handle
\nthe sand mining in Riau that has been inflicting severe damage on
\nthe environment. This team, which is chaired by Minister of
\nMaritime Affairs and Fisheries Rokhmin Dahuri, has managed to
\nforce sand mining companies in the province to suspend their
\noperations.<\/p>",
