Team to look into starvation reports<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): A fact-finding team of local councilors has been
\nassigned to look into reports that a number of villagers in
\nParung subdistrict are facing starvation due to soaring food
\nprices.<\/p>\n
\"Our team started visiting some villages today. We want to see
\nif the reports are correct and not just exaggerated rumors,\" the
\ncouncil's speaker, Eso Soekarso, said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
If the team finds evidence backing up the reports, he said,
\nthe council would urge the administration to distribute basic
\nfood commodities to affected villagers at government-subsidized
\nprices.<\/p>\n
Another alternative is to plant crops on unused land in the
\naffected areas, Eso added.<\/p>\n
He did not disclose the team's size or the villages being
\nvisited.<\/p>\n
According to a resident of Kuripan village, Junaedi, some
\npeople could no longer afford to buy rice due to skyrocketing
\nprices.<\/p>\n
In order to feed their families, some villagers had resorted
\nto stealing rice from their neighbors.<\/p>\n
\"Many people have found it too difficult to buy rice, so some
\nof them have stolen it from their neighbors,\" he told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
Junaedi said one of his neighbors, Ada, had told him that she
\nhad two liters of rice stolen from a boboko (traditional bamboo-
\nmade rice container) on her kitchen table.<\/p>\n
The housewife, he said, had gone out to collect some water
\nfrom the well outside her house. When she returned, the rice
\ncontainer was missing.<\/p>\n
She rushed to report the case to the local neighborhood chief.
\nWhen she returned to the house, she found her boboko in its
\noriginal place but it was already empty.<\/p>\n
Similar incidents have been reported by villagers in
\nCibentang, Ciseeng, Cihue Mekar, Parigi Mekar and Cibeuteung
\nMuara, Junaedi said.<\/p>\n
\"It may sound like a fairy tale but it's true,\" he said.
