Sutanto vowed on Wednesday to investigate the bloody clash<br>\nwhich claimed the lives of two Nomensen Christian University<br>\nstudents on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He said a special team had been established to conduct the<br>\ninvestigation. \"The team will find out if there was a procedural<br>\nerror or anything relating to the fatal clash between the<br>\nstudents and the police.\"<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, North Sumatra Police spokesman Lt. Col. Amrin Karim<br>\nsaid the university's plan to file a lawsuit against the police<br>\nover the death of the students was understandable. \"Who wouldn't<br>\nfile a lawsuit in the face of such an incident?\"<\/p>\n<p>\"But we also have evidence collected from the site, and police<br>\nwere not reckless in their actions. The assault began after the<br>\nstudents took a policeman hostage as he passed in front of the<br>\ncampus,\" Amrin said. \"That forced other police officers to enter<br>\nthe campus.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"There will be no cover-up of this case. The police always<br>\nrespect the law,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>University rector Ericson Simarmata said earlier he planned to<br>\nsue the North Sumatra Police chief for the incident. Two<br>\nstudents, identified as Kelvin Nababan and Rikardo Silitonga,<br>\nwere shot dead and a number of others injured in the clash.<\/p>\n<p>Simarmata also said he would sue the chief of the East Medan<br>\nPolice over a beating he allegedly suffered at the hands of<br>\npolice officers during the violence. \"I told the police officers<br>\nseveral times that I was the rector, but they continued beating<br>\nme.\"<\/p>\n<p>The clash began after students rallied to protest the arrest<br>\nof a fellow student, Panal Pakpahan, for gambling. Police refused<br>\nto release Pakpahan, enraging the students.<\/p>\n<p>In Denpasar, Bali, a number of students from Udayana<br>\nUniversity demonstrated at police headquarters against the<br>\nviolence in Medan.<\/p>\n<p>They shouted at the officers on duty at the headquarters,<br>\ncalling them murderers. The students met with Denpasar Police<br>\ndeputy chief Col. AA Antara and demanded that the Bali Police<br>\napologize for the Medan killings.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are deeply concerned with the fatal clash, but we cannot<br>\nfulfill your request (for an apology) because it (the incident)<br>\ntook place in Medan, not in Bali,\" Antara said.
