Team set to probe Munir's death<\/p>\n

The government-sanctioned fact-finding team formed to assist the
\npolice investigation into the death of rights activist Munir is
\nready to begin work, a police officer said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Chief of the 13-strong team, Brig, Gen. Marsudi Hanafi said he
\nand his colleagues would regroup on Tuesday to put together all
\nthe information each member possessed and set a timetable.<\/p>\n
"We will then exchange our data with the police team's
\nfindings," said Marsudi, a senior detective.<\/p>\n
Presidential Regulation No. 111\/2004 which was signed by
\nPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Dec. 23 allows the fact-
\nfinding team to convey its views to the police, closely monitor
\nthe investigation conducted by the police and summon and question
\npeople connected to the case when necessary.<\/p>\n
The team has to complete its work within three months of its
\nestablishment, but its term could be extended for another three
\nmonths.<\/p>\n
In the regulation, the President appointed Marsudi the team's
\nchairman, with rights activist Asmara Nababan as his deputy.<\/p>\n
Members of the team include Bambang Widjojanto of the
\nFoundation of the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute (YLBHI), Usman
\nHamid from the Indonesian Human Rights Watch (Imparsial),
\nAttorney General's Office pre-trial director I Putu Kusa, human
\nrights campaigners Smita Notosusanto, Kemala Tjandrakirana and
\nRachland Nashidik.<\/p>\n
However, noted lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis, former first lady
\nSinta Nuriah and Muhammadiyah chairman Syafii Maarif, who were
\nproposed by rights activists and the National Police, were not
\nincluded in the team.<\/p>\n
Munir, the founder of both Imparsial and the Commission for
\nMissing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras), died of
\narsenic poisoning aboard a Garuda flight from Jakarta to
\nAmsterdam on Sept. 7.<\/p>\n
Police started their probe into Munir's untimely death after
\nthe Netherlands Forensic Institute disclosed the cause of death.
\nThe institute said it found excessive levels of arsenic in
\nMunir's stomach, urine and blood.<\/p>\n
The police have questioned over 30 people, including Garuda
\nflight attendants who were on duty the day Munir died, but have
\nnot named any suspects.<\/p>",
