        "content": "<p>Team sent to study religious violence<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Religious Affairs Tarmizi Taher<br>\ncalled on religious groups to exercise self restraint and make<br>\ngreater efforts to live peacefully.<\/p>\n<p>\"Don't be provoked into any actions which may ruin the<br>\nreligious tolerance that we have been building,\" he said<br>\nyesterday at a hearing of the House of Representatives'<br>\nCommission IX on religious affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Tarmizi was commenting on recent religious conflict in the<br>\nEast Java capital of Surabaya which damaged 10 churches. This is<br>\nthe first official statement on the incident which occurred<br>\nearlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Tarmizi said his office has sent a special team to investigate<br>\nthe reported assaults and church burning in the Kenjeran district<br>\nof Surabaya. The incidents were triggered by Moslem and Christian<br>\nconflict.<\/p>\n<p>\"Yes, there are ten churches damaged, nine of which were<br>\nseriously damaged,\" he confirmed. \"We are still investigating the<br>\ncase.\"<\/p>\n<p>Tarmizi said he had not received reports on the assault, but<br>\npromised to take stern actions against those found guilty.<\/p>\n<p>He asked the public await for a report from the ministry's<br>\nteam rather than listen to rumors.<\/p>\n<p>The Communion of Churches in Indonesia earlier this month<br>\nissued a statement on the incident, which expressed great<br>\nconcern: \"We call on the government to reveal the background and<br>\nmotive behind the incident, so that our community can stay<br>\nunited.\"<\/p>\n<p>The communion also called on other religious groups to renew<br>\nefforts to preserve peaceful co-existence. \"Let's keep on<br>\nbuilding the spirit of dialog and cooperation,\" the statement,<br>\nsigned by Reverend Weinata Sairin, said.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of Indonesia's largest Moslem organization Nahdlatul<br>\nUlama (NU) Abdurrahman Wahid said the campaign for peaceful co-<br>\nexistence needs not only tolerance but also \"brotherhood\".<\/p>\n<p>\"Tolerance breeds respect but not care. Brotherhood, on the<br>\nother hand, results in respect and care as well,\" he said at a<br>\nSurabaya seminar held by Petra Christian University.<\/p>\n<p>He said such a stance is needed to develop peace within<br>\ndiversity. \"All human beings are brothers. Religions, races and<br>\nethnic and social groups may differ but we all should be united<br>\nin the life of the nation,\" he said. (01)<\/p>",
