        "content": "<p>Team manager all-important: Surjadi<\/p>\n<p>BOGOR (JP): Indonesia's team manager for the Thomas and Uber<br>\ncups will play a crucial role, particularly for the decider in<br>\nthe best-of-five match ties, a former chairman of the Badminton<br>\nAssociation of Indonesia (PBSI) said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Surjadi, speaking after watching simulation matches at<br>\nPadjadjaran Stadium here, said the team manager would be required<br>\nto boost the players' motivation and fighting spirit in playing<br>\ntheir best and decide the right strategy in each match.<\/p>\n<p>PBSI has yet to name a team manager for the Thomas and Uber<br>\ncups, respectively the sport's premier men's and women's team<br>\nevents. They will be played simultaneously in Kuala Lumpur in<br>\nMay.<\/p>\n<p>PBSI executive director Karsono is rumored to be the choice<br>\nfor the position, but association chairman Subagyo Hadisiswoyo<br>\nhas not made a formal announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\"A team manager must not panic in a critical situation. As the<br>\nleader of the team, he must be able to take action in his<br>\ncapacity which can please all members,\" said Surjadi, who was the<br>\nassociation's chairman when Indonesia won consecutive Thomas and<br>\nUber cups in 1994 in Jakarta and 1996 in Hong Kong. Indonesia<br>\nalso won the Thomas Cup in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Surjadi said PBSI officials and experienced shuttlers must<br>\nshare their experience with younger members of the team.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's different playing in many cities abroad compared to<br>\nKuala Lumpur. If we enter the lion's den, we must be sure we are<br>\nable to tame it. That's what our team manager must do.\"<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian shuttlers have often suffered injuries during the<br>\nbiennial team competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Surjadi expressed optimism the country's shuttlers would be<br>\nable to bring home the titles.<\/p>\n<p>However, Subagyo was pessimistic about the chances of the<br>\nIndonesian women's team, lacking semiretired team stalwart Susi<br>\nSusanti, even reaching the Uber Cup final.<\/p>\n<p>\"We must be realistic. We are only targeting our shuttlers<br>\nmaking the semifinals. If they can reach the final, it's will be<br>\na blessing from God.\"<\/p>\n<p>Men's singles player Hendrawan said he would face the toughest<br>\nchallenge of his career as the first singles player.<\/p>\n<p>\"I will have to face Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark, Wong<br>\nChoon Han of Malaysia and Xia Xuanze of China. I have equal<br>\nchances against all of them.\"<\/p>\n<p>Discussing his preparation, the world number two said: \"I was<br>\nvery exhausted in the last two weeks due to the hard training we<br>\nunderwent. I'm sure I can improve my condition in the remaining<br>\ntwo weeks.\"<\/p>\n<p>Hendrawan was pushed to three games against junior Ronny<br>\nAgustinus 9-15, 15-6, 15-6 in the simulation.<\/p>\n<p>World number one men's doubles pairing Candra Wijaya and Tony<br>\nGunawan edged Sigit Budiarto and Antonius Budi Irianto 15-9, 17-<br>\n15.<\/p>\n<p>All four players threw their sweat-soaked T-shirts into the<br>\nstands of 2,500 spectators.<\/p>\n<p>Second singles Taufik Hidayat defeated Hariyanto Arbi 17-14,<br>\n15-7.
