        "content": "<p>Teak forest<\/p>\n<p>From Media Indonesia<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago almost all media in Jakarta reported the that<br>\nthe Wangon community in Central Java attacked the Forest<br>\nSupervision Office (Perhutani) located in the village. This<br>\nattack was prompted by an earlier incident in which a special<br>\nsecurity guard was said to have mistakenly shot a villager<br>\nsuspected of poaching teakwood from the forest. It was not the<br>\nfirst incident in the region, and similar cases have happened in<br>\nother regions.<\/p>\n<p>The clash was believed to be a consequence of the prevailing<br>\nsocial gap between the Perhutani community and the poverty<br>\nstricken villagers. Perhutani is the state-owned company<br>\nresponsible for managing teak forests in Java. Forest management<br>\nhas been conducted since the 18th century, and has brought huge<br>\nprofits to independent Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The Wangon forest has produced millions of cubic meters of<br>\ntop quality teakwood. However, the villagers living adjacent to<br>\nthe forest are very poor and have little land to cultivate. Their<br>\nsource of livelihood is very limited.<\/p>\n<p>Perhutani has established a program it calls the societal<br>\nforest and village development scheme. It allows the villagers to<br>\ncollect the leaves and small branches from the teak trees and<br>\nsell them at market. But even this scheme does not help the<br>\nvillagers improve their lives substantially, because they need to<br>\nwork from dawn to late afternoon to earn Rp 1,500. The workers<br>\npaid by Perhutani earn no more than Rp 2,000 a day. Teakwood<br>\ntheft has been going on since colonial times, and has caused<br>\ngreat losses to the government.<\/p>\n<p>Given the situation, I appeal to Perhutani to raise the<br>\nminimum pay for local laborers. The government should also<br>\nprovide a health center, schools and the other social<br>\ninfrastructure needed to improve the lives of the local<br>\ncommunity.<\/p>\n<p>S.
