'Teaching by example is best'<\/p>\n
Children are supposed to receive education and protection from
\ntheir families, the society and the state. In observance of
\nNational Children Day, which falls on July 23, The Jakarta Post
\nasked some people their thoughts on children's rights.<\/p>\n
Onny, 33, works as an event organizer for a sports association
\nin Senayan, South Jakarta. He lives in Cempaka Putih, Central
\nJakarta, with his wife and daughter:<\/p>\n
It is the responsibility of the family to protect children,
\nnot school teachers or the government. Children nowadays are more
\ncritical than those of our generation. They will protest if our
\nattitude contradicts our principles.<\/p>\n
Providing an example is best for the children. If I want to
\nteach discipline, I must do something good continuously at first,
\nsay for instance praying. My daughter always asks questions about
\nwhat I do, before she follows me.<\/p>\n

Many children are still unlucky because they do not have the
\nchance to enjoy their childhood, Instead, they must work to feed
\nthemselves.<\/p>\n
If I'm not wrong, around 3.3 million children nationwide are
\nworking. It's terrible because they are exposed to violence,
\nexploitation and mistreatment from their employers.<\/p>\n
The government must draw up strong regulations to protect
\nchildren. Many children are still left unprotected, even by their
\nown families. It's imperative the government improves the current
\ncondition for the sake of the children.<\/p>\n
