        "content": "<p>Teachers to make Sundanese fun<\/p>\n<p>BOGOR: In preparation for implementing the merit-based<br>\nnational education system in July, about 100 Sundanese language<br>\nteachers of local middle schools are attending a course on how to<br>\nmake learning the indigenous language more fun.<\/p>\n<p>Although the town is a melting pot of various Indonesian<br>\ncultures, Sundanese is a compulsory subject in West Java schools.<\/p>\n<p>Sambas Bratasonjaya, assistant for social and economy affairs,<br>\nread a statement from Bogor Mayor Diani Budiarto that the<br>\nteachers were responsible for preserving the language by raising<br>\nthe students' interest in learning it.<\/p>\n<p>The merit-based education system was launched in 2002 to<br>\ncorrect the previous one-way teaching method, in which a teacher<br>\nneeded no particular expertise in the subject taught. Education<br>\nexperts deemed the new system would help improve the quality of<br>\nnational education.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Bogor Education Agency head Janny Permadhy said<br>\nthe municipality would retain the Sundanese language as a<br>\ncompulsory subject \"because it is one of the local<br>\ncharacteristics\". -- JP<\/p>",
