Teachers report principal to council<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Four parents and 10 teachers from SMPN 270 junior
\nhigh school in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, reported the
\nschool's principal to the City Council on Tuesday for allegedly
\ncharging students illegal fees.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the delegation, Harateng Harahap, who is also
\nthe vice principal, said that the principal, Tarmudji, had asked
\nfirst-year students to pay Rp 49,000 each, second-year students
\nRp 50,000 while those in the third year have to pay more than Rp
\n60,000 each, BeritaJakarta.com reported.<\/p>\n
He also said that Tarmudji had asked third-year students to
\npay for the final tests and that new students were required to
\npay high admission fees. On the other hand, the quality of the
\nteaching has declined.<\/p>\n
The delegation urged the city administration to dismiss
\nTarmudji.<\/p>\n
Harahap said that they had earlier complained to the local
\neducation office and the North Jakarta mayoralty, but had
\nreceived no response.<\/p>\n
The deputy chairman of the council's Commission E on social
\nwelfare, Ishak Iskandar, promised to send a letter to the Kelapa
\nGading education office to offer mediation in the settlement of
\nthe case. He told the teachers and parents to settle the problem

JAKARTA: Police will raid places dealing in firecrackers,
\nsharp weapons, firearms and explosives in Jakarta ahead of the
\nMuslim fasting month of Ramadhan, said a senior police officer on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
\"The raids aim at upholding security in Jakarta ahead of
\nRamadhan, which starts early next month,\" said city police
\nspokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam.<\/p>\n
Anton said that the police would detain anyone found
\ndistributing, selling or storing firecrackers.<\/p>\n
\"We won't postpone detaining those charged with possessing
\nfirecrackers, just like in drug abuse cases,\" said Anton.<\/p>\n
Anton also said that the police would punish any officer found
\nbacking the distribution or trade of firecrackers, firearms,

JAKARTA: A three-day historical exhibition and film about
\nformer Indian prime minister Nehru and former president Sukarno
\nwill open on Saturday at the National Archives Building on Jl.
\nGajah Mada 111, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The exhibition of over 60 photographs, personal letters and
\nnewspaper articles from 1947 to 1950 show how the two nations
\nsupported each other during their struggles for independence.
\nThey record the visits of Sukarno to India, when India achieved
\nindependence, and Nehru to Indonesia, and also how the two
\nleaders sought to build the Nonaligned Movement through the Asia
\nAfrica Conference in Bandung in 1955.<\/p>\n
The pictures of Asia's most important historical figures,
\nincluding former vice president Mohammad Hatta former Indian
\nprime ministers Mahatma Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, will be
\npresented in the exhibition.<\/p>\n

\nmemorandum of understanding between the Everland Zoo in South
\nKorea and the Indonesian Safari Park in Bogor, West Java, which
\nwas scheduled to take place on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\"The Everland Zoo requested the delay considering the Bali
\nbomb attacks,\" Yulius H. Suprihardo, safari park spokesman, said.<\/p>\n
The park planned to cooperate with its South Korean
