        "content": "<p>Teachers on strike for salary backpay<\/p>\n<p>PURBALINGGA, Central Java: Continuing their fight to receive<br>\nsalary backpay, thousands of teachers here entered a second day<br>\nof strike action on Thursday, leaving hundreds of thousands of<br>\nstudents without classes.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the first day of their scheduled week-long<br>\nstrike, the teachers held a sit-in protest in front of their<br>\nschools with their students present, while on Thursday many of<br>\nthem locked classes and staff rooms.<\/p>\n<p>The teachers have launched the strike to demand the payment of<br>\nsalary backpay earned from January, 2001, which, up to July, had<br>\naccumulated to about Rp 6 billion (US$705,882).<\/p>\n<p>Some of the schools closed during Thursday&apos;s strike included<br>\nthe state SMP Bukateja I junior high school and a number of state<br>\nelementary schools in the Purbalingga Kota and Bojongsari<br>\ndistricts.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Purbalingga Regent Triyono Budi Sasongko,<br>\nregency education office head Suratno and regency teachers&apos;<br>\nassociation chairman Sudiman called on the teachers to end their<br>\nstrike.<\/p>\n<p>The strike has also started to aggravate many parents.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;If they continue with their strike, we will also stage a<br>\nprotest rally against them. We have paid a lot for our children&apos;s<br>\neducation.
