Teachers learn about quality<\/p>\n

\"When teachers take pride of what they do, then they are able to
\ngive the best to students,\" said M. Achmadi, principal of a state
\nhigh school in Depok.<\/p>\n
As part of Sampoerna Foundation's School Quality Improvement
\nProgram (SQIP), teachers from State High School No. 3 Depok have
\nundergone training sessions changing the way they view their role
\nas educators, and the presentation of material they teach in
\nschool.<\/p>\n
During the paradigm shift sessions, teachers are reminded of
\ntheir role in the education of future generations, and the
\nimportance of their choice of career.<\/p>\n
\"After all who appreciates teachers these days? If teachers do
\nnot appreciate their own profession, no one will,\" sports teacher
\nand State High School No. 3's vice principal Benny RES said.<\/p>\n
Besides awakening a sense of pride in teachers, they are also
\ntrained to become more creative in delivering lessons.<\/p>\n
\"All this time teachers are highly theoretical in their
\nteaching, the training opened up our eyes to other methods of
\ndelivering a scientific concept,\" Achmadi said, explaining that
\nit has also taught teachers to involve class participation, and
\nas a result communication between teachers and students have
\nbecome more open.<\/p>\n
\"Students then are more willing to participate actively in
\nclass, because they are not afraid of the teacher,\" he added.<\/p>\n
SQIP was first launched in March, beginning with three state
\nhigh schools in Depok, Sekayu in South Sumatra and Balikpapan in
\nEast Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
It is expected that by 2010 some 33 state high schools across
\nIndonesia will have participated in the program.<\/p>\n
The idea was a cooperation between Sampoerna Foundation and
\nregional administrations to provide the schools with high quality
\ntraining for its teachers and principals in order to improve the
\nschool's teaching and management quality.<\/p>\n
\"We designed programs to improve the management skills of the
\nprincipal, improve its school-based management, curriculum
\nenrichment, development of teachers, and also development of
\nstudents,\" Sampoerna Foundation's program and alumni affairs
\ndirector Eddy F. Henry said.<\/p>\n
He said that while the foundation provides for training, the
\nregional administrations have agreed to meet the physical needs
\nof the school.<\/p>\n
The training are provided in cooperation with the Singapore's
\nNational Institute of Education and experts from top national
\nuniversities, Eddy explained.<\/p>\n
\"After three years, we expect the schools to have excellent
\nquality teachers, their graduates accepted at top universities,
\nand the school itself self sustaining with good management,\" Eddy
\nsaid.<\/p>",
