        "content": "<p>Teachers demand permanent status<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of teachers who have been working for the government on<br>\na contract basis demanded permanent status as the government<br>\nplans to hire some 300,000 new public servants this year.<\/p>\n<p>They said that at least 70 percent of the new permanent<br>\nteaching jobs should be allocated to them, particularly those<br>\nwhose contracts would expire this year.<\/p>\n<p>The demand emerged during a gathering on Saturday of teachers<br>\nfrom various regions who have been working on contract in state<br>\nschools in Surakarta, Central Java.<\/p>\n<p>Achmad Tugiran, a member of the association of teachers<br>\nworking on a non-permanent basis, stated that there were over<br>\n235,000 teachers working on contract who were hired in 2003 and<br>\nwhose contract will end later this year.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there were over 174,000 teachers hired in 2004,<br>\nand whose contract will expire next year.<\/p>\n<p>The plan to hire new public servants this year was announced<br>\nby State Minister of Administrative Reforms Taufik Effendi<br>\nrecently.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of people have been working as teachers, nurses and<br>\nother professions on a non-permanent basis, some of them for as<br>\nlong as 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Under the contract system, the workers receive less pay and no<br>\nadded benefits such as housing, meal or transport allowances, let<br>\nalone pensions.<\/p>\n<p>The government has more than 3.5 million permanent public<br>\nservants.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The government should give priority to non-permanent teachers<br>\nhired in 2003 as their contract will soon expire,&quot; Achmad said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We&apos;re facing uncertainty here (because the contract will<br>\nexpire).  The government should not neglect us,&quot; he added.<\/p>",
