        "content": "<p>Teachers demand civil servant status<\/p>\n<p>LHOKSEUMAWE, Aceh: About 2,000 temporary teachers gathered at<br>\nthe Lhokseumawe Council on Friday to demand that they be<br>\nrecruited as civil servants and their honorarium be raised.<\/p>\n<p>The teachers, some of whom have been working for more than two<br>\ndecades as temporary teachers in the conflict-torn province, also<br>\ndemanded that special incentives be given to those assigned in<br>\nremote and critical areas.<\/p>\n<p>They said they received a monthly honorarium of Rp 250,000<br>\nwithout benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Lhokseumawe deputy councilor Armia Ibrahim said the Council<br>\nwould discuss the teachers&apos; plight with the local administration.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We were also surprised to hear that some teachers have been<br>\nworking for 25 years, yet have not been recruited as civil<br>\nservants,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The government launched last year a massive military offensive<br>\nagainst the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM), a secessionist<br>\ngroup that has been fighting for independence for the resource-<br>\nrich province since 1976. -- Antara<\/p>",
