Teachers clash over allowance<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi: Violence marred a rally staged by
\nthousands of teachers at the local Teaching and Education Agency
\noffice (DPP) over their reduced allowance on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The protest turned ugly after the head of the agency, Rais
\nLamakampali, refused to meet with the teachers' representative
\nfor negotiations.<\/p>\n
Police were called as the teachers began to stone the windows
\nof the agency building. A minor clash broke out when the police
\nprevented the protesters from forcing their way into the
\nbuilding.<\/p>\n
One of the protesters, Asnidar, a teacher at state junior high
\nschool SLTP Negeri 9, said the incident should not have occurred
\nhad Rais received their representative Tjatjo Thaha.<\/p>\n
\"We are very disappointed with the way the DPP chief dismissed
\nPak Tjatjo from his office,\" Asnidar said.<\/p>\n
The teachers said they used to receive around Rp 586,000
\n(US$53) as a monthly allowance, but starting from May last year
\nthe amount was cut to Rp 200,000.<\/p>\n
Asnidar speculated that the allowance had been reduced after
\nthe teachers were awarded scholarships to continue their studies.
\nShe said the teachers accepted the program following assurance
\nthat it would not affect the amount of their allowance.<\/p>\n
