Teachers advised not to use multiple choice test format<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Teachers should keep the use of multiple choice
\ntests to a minimum because of their inability to develop
\nresponsibility, competency and personality, a senior government
\nofficial said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"I propose this not because multiple choice tests are not good
\nenough but rather because it is not easy to make questions which
\ncan really measure a student's competence,\" said Soedijarto, the
\nMinistry of Education and Culture's Director General for Informal
\nEducation, Youth and Sports, at the graduation ceremony of the
\nJakarta Teacher Training and Education Institute (IKIP).<\/p>\n
Soedijarto, in his oration on The role of teachers in
\nimproving human resources quality in Indonesia towards the free
\nmarket in the 21st century, pointed out that multiple choice
\ntests are unable to measure the various capabilities that
\nstudents are supposed to master.<\/p>\n
Presently, a large proportion of mid-term and final
\nexaminations given to elementary, junior and senior high school
\nstudents are multiple choice, on which a student only needs to
\npick one answer out of the four or five provided.<\/p>\n
Very few of the answers require writing short essays or even
\nfilling in empty spaces.<\/p>\n
Except for mass enrollment tests for universities, which have
\nto be very selective academically, Soedijarto said the use of
\nmultiple choice tests should be strictly limited and given
\ntogether with other tests.<\/p>\n
\"I am asking prospective teachers to please, please refrain
\nfrom making multiple choice tests for their students,\" he said in
\nfront of 1,396 graduates of the teacher training and education
\ninstitute.<\/p>\n
Over 590 students graduated from IKIP's diploma course, 779
\nfrom the four-year degree (S1) program and 26 from postgraduate
\n(S2 and S3) programs.<\/p>\n
Soedijarto said that studies have shown that students only
\nstudy what they feel will be emphasized on an evaluation or test.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore, I think it will be very difficult to achieve the
\ngoal of education itself unless the evaluation system which is
\napplied in schools is relevant to that goal,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The standard national evaluation (or final) examinations also
\nneed revision, he said, \"for the sake of the quality of national
\neducation\".<\/p>\n
National evaluation exams, locally known as Ebtanas, only make
\nup a small percentage of a student's overall grade, which will
\ndetermine whether or not a student passes his or her last year of
\nelementary, junior or senior high school. (pwn)<\/p>",
