Teacher orders pupils to whip nine-year old<\/p>\n
Though shock of the tragic killing of a student at the Public
\nAdministration Institute (STPDN) still remains, students are
\nstill being beaten in Indonesian schools.<\/p>\n
In the latest violence, a teacher from Remban State Elementary
\nSchool in South Sumatra allegedly ordered classmates of a nine-
\nyear-old boy to take turns beating the child with a whip over the
\nweekend.<\/p>\n
The teacher, identified as Sa, 27, reportedly ordered the
\nattack because he considered the child, Alan Anarki, to be
\nperforming poorly in mathematics.<\/p>\n
Though Alan suffered serious injuries and was vomiting from
\nthe pain, the boy's father, Ahsan, said Monday that he had been
\nforced to remove his son from the local community health center
\nimmediately after the incident because he could not pay the
\nmedical expenses.<\/p>\n
It is not the first time Sa has been accused of beating
\nchildren.<\/p>\n
School principal Asman said Sa, who had been teaching at the
\nschool for the last five years, had been involved in two previous
\nattacks on his students.<\/p>\n
\"But we didn't have enough courage at the time to take action
\nagainst him, on the grounds that he is a relative of a powerful
\nfamily in the subdistrict.\"<\/p>\n
Asman said Sa had been suspended indefinitely, pending the
\nresults of an investigation by the Musri Rawas regency education
\noffice.<\/p>\n
Ahsan said he was seeking financial aid from the local
\nadministration for his son's care.<\/p>\n
Local education office head Syafaruddin confirmed it would
\ninvestigate the beating to ensure the case, which had comparisons
\nto the STPDN tragedy, would not be repeated.<\/p>\n
Last August, STPDN student Wahyu Hidayat was beaten to death
\nby his fellow students for failing to attend a ceremony. He
\ninstead went home to visit his parents. The case highlighted a
