Nuriana for the 2003-2008<br>\nperiod.<\/p>\n<p>Erwan Saad, a Muslim teacher in Cililin, a remote village 40<br>\nkilometers south of Bandung, and Eka Surya, a successful farmer<br>\nin Bandung regency, handed in their candidacy files on Monday to<br>\nthe gubernatorial election committee set up by the provincial<br>\nlegislative council.<\/p>\n<p>The two said they had dared to register themselves as<br>\nalternative candidates representing the needy, the oppressed and<br>\nthe low-income people in the province.<\/p>\n<p>\"West Java people will never lose if they support me and I win<br>\nthe gubernatorial election because I will take their side and<br>\nfight for the interests of farmers who are used to suffering<br>\nlosses in land disputes with businessmen and the local<br>\nadministration,\" Eka told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed to have 105,000 farmers and youths supporting his<br>\ncandidacy.<\/p>\n<p>Erwan and Eka were two of 21 figures who registered their<br>\ncandidacy with the election committee on the first day of the 14-<br>\nday registration period that ends on March 7.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining 19 were, among others, Indonesian Textile<br>\nProducers Association (API) chairman Lili Asdjudiredja, former<br>\nchief of the Army's Territorial Command Adang Ruhiatna, former<br>\nBogor mayor Soedradjat, provincial legislative council member<br>\nKurdi Moekri and the wife of former Bandung mayor Jundjunan,<br>\nPopon Jundjunan.<\/p>\n<p>Kurdi said he would quit after his candidacy was officially<br>\naccepted by the election committee. He was supported in his bid<br>\nby his United Development Party (PPP) faction in the legislature.<\/p>\n<p>Nuriana's term of office will expire on June 6 after leading<br>\nthe province for two consecutive periods.<\/p>\n<p>Three factions in the legislative council who have announced<br>\ntheir candidates have yet to register with the committee.<\/p>\n<p>The local chapter of the National Awakening Party (PKB) will<br>\nname Tayo Tarmadi, former chief of the Siliwangi Military Command<br>\noverseeing the province and the local Justice Party (PK) will<br>\nnominate Ma'mur Hasanuddin.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan),<br>\nthe biggest faction in the legislative council, has named Rudy<br>\nHarsa Tanaya, chairman of the party's local chapter, but has yet<br>\nto register him with the committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Golkar Party and the Indonesian Military\/National Police<br>\nfactions have yet to announce the names of their candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Election committee chairman Eka Santosa said the committee<br>\nwould hand over the names of registrants to the provincial<br>\nlegislature's six factions for selection.<\/p>\n<p>\"It depends on the factions on who they will nominate and<br>\nsupport in the gubernatorial elections whose date is to be set<br>\nlater,\" he said.<\/p>",
