Teacher, farmer to contest gubernatorial race<\/p>\n

Joining a list of known names, a Muslim teacher and a farmer in
\nWest Java registered themselves to contest the gubernatorial
\nelections to replace outgoing R. Nuriana for the 2003-2008
\nperiod.<\/p>\n
Erwan Saad, a Muslim teacher in Cililin, a remote village 40
\nkilometers south of Bandung, and Eka Surya, a successful farmer
\nin Bandung regency, handed in their candidacy files on Monday to
\nthe gubernatorial election committee set up by the provincial
\nlegislative council.<\/p>\n
The two said they had dared to register themselves as
\nalternative candidates representing the needy, the oppressed and
\nthe low-income people in the province.<\/p>\n
\"West Java people will never lose if they support me and I win
\nthe gubernatorial election because I will take their side and
\nfight for the interests of farmers who are used to suffering
\nlosses in land disputes with businessmen and the local
\nadministration,\" Eka told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He claimed to have 105,000 farmers and youths supporting his
\ncandidacy.<\/p>\n
Erwan and Eka were two of 21 figures who registered their
\ncandidacy with the election committee on the first day of the 14-
\nday registration period that ends on March 7.<\/p>\n
The remaining 19 were, among others, Indonesian Textile
\nProducers Association (API) chairman Lili Asdjudiredja, former
\nchief of the Army's Territorial Command Adang Ruhiatna, former
\nBogor mayor Soedradjat, provincial legislative council member
\nKurdi Moekri and the wife of former Bandung mayor Jundjunan,
\nPopon Jundjunan.<\/p>\n
Kurdi said he would quit after his candidacy was officially
\naccepted by the election committee. He was supported in his bid
\nby his United Development Party (PPP) faction in the legislature.<\/p>\n
Nuriana's term of office will expire on June 6 after leading
\nthe province for two consecutive periods.<\/p>\n
Three factions in the legislative council who have announced
\ntheir candidates have yet to register with the committee.<\/p>\n
The local chapter of the National Awakening Party (PKB) will
\nname Tayo Tarmadi, former chief of the Siliwangi Military Command
\noverseeing the province and the local Justice Party (PK) will
\nnominate Ma'mur Hasanuddin.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan),
\nthe biggest faction in the legislative council, has named Rudy
\nHarsa Tanaya, chairman of the party's local chapter, but has yet
\nto register him with the committee.<\/p>\n
The Golkar Party and the Indonesian Military\/National Police
\nfactions have yet to announce the names of their candidates.<\/p>\n
Election committee chairman Eka Santosa said the committee
\nwould hand over the names of registrants to the provincial
\nlegislature's six factions for selection.<\/p>\n
\"It depends on the factions on who they will nominate and
\nsupport in the gubernatorial elections whose date is to be set
\nlater,\" he said.<\/p>",
