        "content": "<p>Taxi service in Batam poor<\/p>\n<p>BATAM, Riau: Foreign tourists called on the Batam authorities<br>\nto raid taxies operating illegally and to repair the local<br>\ntransportation system to help promote tourism on the tax-free<br>\nisland.<\/p>\n<p>G. Preira, a Singaporean tourist, said many foreign tourists<br>\ncomplained about the poor transportation system and the poor<br>\nlocal taxi service.<\/p>\n<p>\"Taxi drivers have arbitrarily imposed their own fares on<br>\ntourists because taxies operating on the island are not equipped<br>\nwith meters,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Preira who came to Batam along with his two American friends<br>\nsaid they were very disappointed with a taxi driver who had<br>\ncharged them S$200 (Rp 1.1 million) for a 25-km journey between<br>\nNongsa and Nagoya, two tourist resorts on the island.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have lodged a complaint with the local police but no<br>\naction had since been taken against the taxi driver,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Singaporean tourists would be reluctant to visit the<br>\nisland unless local authorities repair the transportation system<br>\nand raid all illegal taxies.<\/p>\n<p>Around 3,000 foreign tourists from neighboring countries such<br>\nas Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand visit the island weekly.<br>\n-- Antara<\/p>",
