Taxi driver murdered<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A 22-year-old man was arrested by South Jakarta
\npolice on Sunday morning for allegedly killing a taxi driver in
\nan effort to get money to help his ailing mother.<\/p>\n
Police said Amanu, an employee of a cleaning service company
\nat the Ministry of Cooperative Affairs on Jl. Rasuna Said, has
\nadmitted to killing Marsasak Sipahuras, 38, a driver of the
\nJakarta International Taxi company.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said yesterday
\nthat the suspect, who lives in the ministry compound, told
\ninterrogators that he had been very upset after being informed on
\nSaturday evening that his mother was sick in his hometown
\nLamongan, East Java.<\/p>\n
He was very frustrated because he had no money, either to
\nreturn home or to buy medicine for his mother, Iman said. Amanu
\nfinally decided to commit a robbery, he said.<\/p>\n
The suspect first took a knife from the office kitchen and
\nwrapped it with a cloth, Iman said.<\/p>\n
He then took a bus to Pasar Rumput, Central Jakarta, in search
\nof potential victims.<\/p>\n
Finally, he hailed a taxi and asked the driver to take him to
\nthe ministry office. On the way there, Amanu pulled out his knife
\nand demanded money from Sipahuras.<\/p>\n
However, the driver punched him in the eye, whereupon Amanu
\nstabbed the driver in the neck.<\/p>\n
Panicking, the suspect stole the taxi's meter and the radio
\nequipment, rather than the driver's money. He left the taxi with
\nthe dead driver inside. A passing policeman became suspicious
\nupon noticing Amanu rushing from the taxi.<\/p>\n
Questioned, Amanu told the officer, Corp. Adi Suntoro, that he
\nhad just helped a dying man.<\/p>\n
The officer arrested Amanu, who eventually confessed to the
