The Finance Ministry is expecting to register an additional two million taxpayers this year, courtesy of a \u201csunset policy\u201d campaign that is part of an intensified effort to encourage more people to pay taxes .<\/p>\n
Darmin Nasution, director general of tax at the Ministry of Finance, explained that the sunset policy allows people to register for a new tax identification number until Dec. 31, 2008, without being sanctioned for not having done so previously. The policy also means that the tax office will not chase any unpaid taxes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t really give the exact figure, but for this year, it is likely that we\u2019ll get 2 million people,\u201d Darmin told reporters on the sidelines of an event at the Finance Ministry that gathered the country\u2019s top individual taxpayers.<\/p>\n
Darmin said last year\u2019s efforts managed to register 1 million new taxpayers.<\/p>\n
The country of 220 million people only had around 6 million registered individual taxpayers as of 2007.<\/p>\n
