An Indonesian article argues that Ramadan fasting is not only a spiritual obligation but a holistic practice rooted in Tawhid. It posits dental and oral health as integral to bodily stewardship, linking proper oral hygiene to uninterrupted worship and respectful communal conduct during Ramadan.

This blessed opportunity, let us reflect again on the essence of the
fasting worship we are currently undertaking, not merely as a
fulfillment of the annual obligation, but as a process of creed,
discipline of worship, and responsibility toward the physical trust that
Allah has entrusted to Muslims.

The first pillar in observing the month of Ramadan is the
strengthening of tawhid (monotheism) of Allah. Tawhid is not merely a
static theological concept, but an energy that drives every aspect of a
believer’s life.

Ramadan fasting is the purer form of devotion because it is private;
only the servant and Allah know the truth of the worship. Awareness of
Allah’s absolute watchfulness forms the fundamental basis that educates
believers to fulfil this trust.

Alongside this strengthening of tawhid, Ramadan fasting serves as a
comprehensive instrument of self-purification. Islam is a comprehensive
and complete religion that does not neglect the physical aspects in its
rituals.

In the course of restraining hunger and thirst, the human body
undergoes a remarkable phase of regeneration and detoxification. This is
where the relevance of dental and oral health as part of the integrity
of physical health that is inseparable.

Dental health is not merely a matter of aesthetics or chewing
function; it is a reflection of the discipline of a believer in
following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

Maintaining dental health in the holy month of Ramadan is a tangible
expression of respect for the body’s trust given by Allah. The focus of
worship can be disrupted by neglecting to maintain oral cavity hygiene
consistently.

Physical ailments such as acute toothache or gum inflammation not
only hinder our ability to recite the Qur’an with tajwid, but can also
drastically reduce concentration when performing night prayers or
i’tikaf. Therefore, maintaining dental hygiene by regularly brushing
one’s teeth properly is a form of effort (ikhtiar) that supports the
perfection of Ramadan fasting.

Furthermore, dental health has a social dimension that is strong in
the interaction of our worship. Ramadan is a month of communal worship,
during which we interact closely with fellow believers in the mosque
through Tarawih prayers, joint Qur’an recitation, and assemblies of
knowledge. Maintaining dental cleanliness, a believer is effectively
practising the manners of interaction to avoid disturbing fellow
believers with an unpleasant odour or untidy appearance.

This is the beauty of Islam, where attention to seemingly small
matters such as dental health forms part of noble character. The
sincerity of a believer’s tawhid is tested by how well they can
safeguard every trust from Allah so that it continues to function
optimally in supporting our obedience to Him without causing disturbance
to His servants.
",
