BRUSSELS: Fans of tattooing are putting poisonous chemicals
\ninto their skin because of widespread ignorance about the
\nsubstances used in tattooing dyes, the European Commission
\nwarned.<\/p>\n
\"Would you inject car paint into your skin?\", the Commission
\nasked in a statement accompanying its report on the health risks
\nof tattooing and body-piercing.<\/p>\n
It said most chemicals used in tattoos were industrial
\npigments originally used for other purposes, such as automobile
\npaints or writing ink, and there was little or no safety data to
\nsupport their use in tattoos.<\/p>\n
In addition, laws demanding tattoo artists use gloves and
\nsterile needles did not include rules about the dyes, meaning
\nthey could be impure and dirty without breaking the law.<\/p>\n
The report said that as well as the risk of catching diseases
\nsuch as HIV, hepatitis, or bacterial infections from dirty
\nneedles, tattooing could cause skin cancer, psoriasis, toxic

CHICAGO: Incontinence triggered by physical stress such as
\ncoughing or laughing, a problem faced by 13 million adults in the
\nUnited States alone, can be corrected with exercises and training
\nin many cases, researchers said.<\/p>\n
The problem mainly affects women as a result of pregnancy and
\nchildbirth, menopause and the structure of the female urinary
\ntract, according to experts.<\/p>\n
In an article published in Journal of the American Medical
\nAssociation, researchers said they looked at 200 women aged 40 to
\n78 who were treated over eight weeks.<\/p>\n
Some had visits to clinics that included pelvic floor muscle
\ncontrol instruction, home exercise, bladder control strategies
\nand self-monitoring.<\/p>\n
Dr. Patricia Goode, who headed the study, said an important
\nconclusion is that the condition \"is very treatable without

WASHINGTON: Having a short version of a certain gene may make
\npeople more susceptible to depression after stressful events such
\nas losing a job or a loved one, researchers said.<\/p>\n
People only have to inherit one copy of the gene, from either
\nparent, to become more vulnerable to depression, the researchers
\nin Britain, New Zealand and the United States found.<\/p>\n
The finding, published in Friday's issue of the journal
\nScience, could be the first to show stress as an environmental
\nfactor in causing disease, they said.<\/p>\n
Stress, such as divorce or illness, is a well-known cause of
\ndepression -- one of the five leading causes of disability in the
\nworld.<\/p>\n
\"However, not all people who encounter a stressful life
\nexperience succumb to (depression),\" the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n
They set out to find a gene and looked at the 5-HTT or
\nserotonin transporter gene, because the protein it controls is
\naffected by well-known antidepression drugs called selective
\nserotonin reuptake inhibitors. Serotonin is a message-carrying
