        "content": "<p>Tasty snacks, shame about the MSG<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>A research center has warned consumers of children's snack<br>\nproducts which contain the carcinogen, monosodium glutamate<br>\n(MSG), without mentioning the substance in the list of<br>\ningredients on their packages, and urged the government to<br>\nwithdraw them from the market.<\/p>\n<p>The Public Interest Research and Advocacy Center (PIRAC) said<br>\non Thursday it had discovered 13 brands of snacks that contained<br>\nMSG, but failed to mention it on their packages, either in part<br>\nor in its entirety.<\/p>\n<p>The brands are among those snacks widely sold and most popular<br>\namong children, said Nurhasan of PIRAC as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>Of the brands examined, seven contain MSG but do not mention<br>\nit on their packages, two mention MSG as an ingredient but fail<br>\nto tell the amount it contains, and the other four mention the<br>\nuse of chemical flavoring but not the amount of additive MSG.<\/p>\n<p>The study showed that the amount of MSG in the snacks ranged<br>\nbetween 0.46 percent and 1.59 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Excessive consumption of the MSG chemical additive may cause<br>\nliver problems, trauma, hypertension, stress, fever, allergic<br>\nreactions, nausea, headaches, migraines, asthma, depression and<br>\nneurological damage. The substance is also not recommended for<br>\nconsumption by pregnant women, as it will affect the fetus.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts believe that a maximum 12 milligrams of MSG per<br>\nday could be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>PIRAC deemed that the snack producers had misled consumers by<br>\nnot mentioning the presence of MSG or the amount contained in the<br>\nsnacks, which violates Law No. 8\/1999 on consumer protection and<br>\nGovernment Regulation No. 69\/1999 on labeling and advertisement<br>\nof food products.<\/p>\n<p>\"The BPOM has to order the withdrawal of the products from the<br>\nmarket, unless the producers stop misleading consumers,\" Nurhasan<br>\nsaid, referring to the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested that BPOM require producers to inform consumers<br>\nabout the side effects of MSG consumption on their packages, as<br>\ncigarette producers have done. -- JP<\/p>",
