Tarzan, lord of the shopping mall<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): At Taman Anggrek Mall at the moment you can
\nliterally climb the walls, go skateboarding or if you are feeling
\na little less energetic, be entertained in a jungle environment.
\nThis is all because Tarzan has been swinging across screens
\nJakarta-wide since July 9.<\/p>\n
To celebrate the new animated film, Taman Anggrek Mall, in
\nconjunction with Disney, is hosting a festival of activities
\ndaily from June 24 to July 25.<\/p>\n
Located mainly on the ground floor of the mall, the event is
\nhard to miss as you enter the building, with the 9-meter indoor
\nclimbing wall, skate ramp, and stage buzzing with activity.<\/p>\n
Deasy, 22, has just come down from the indoor climbing wall.
\nShe is momentarily speechless. \"Before you climb it,\" she says,
\n\"you are afraid, but when you get to the top you feel a great
\nsense of freedom, and the feeling of just hanging loose on the
\nway down is awesome. I love it.\"<\/p>\n
There are events for children and adolescents of all ages.
\nFor younger children there are puzzles, rides, stage
\npresentations, and \"many other exciting programs held daily\",
\naccording to the advertising material.<\/p>\n
Coloring, singing, and music competitions offer children the
\nchance to win prizes including Tarzan merchandise, free tickets,
\nand copies of the soundtrack, featuring five songs by Phil
\nCollins.<\/p>\n
If that is not enough and your children want more, twice daily
\nover the weekend there is a Jungle Jamming Party, where children
\nsing and dance on stage to the beats of the jungle; a re-
\nenactment of a scene from the movie.<\/p>\n
For older children, adolescents, or parents there are higher
\nenergy activities including indoor wall climbing, skateboarding,
\nin-line skating and ice-skating.<\/p>\n
According to Rezianni, Taman Anggrek Mall's advertising and
\npublic relations executive, the event illustrates the mall's
\n\"interpretation of the movie into a series of activities which
\nreflect the dynamic characteristics that exemplify Jakarta's
\nyouth\".<\/p>\n
Taman Anggrek Mall has organized the event in conjunction with
\nBeuna Vista International, the promotional division of the Disney
\nfilm company. The mall is relatively new, having been built in
\n1996, and this is the largest movie promotion to date, said
\nRezianni.<\/p>\n
It is also a successful promotion she said, referring to a 20-
\npercent increase in visitor traffic.<\/p>\n
She said the mall's task was to translate the character of
\nTarzan and the movie into live activities that also reflect a
\nmodern interpretation of the energetic animated character.<\/p>\n
\"Our aim is to offer some innovative, unique, interactive and
\nhealthy activities to celebrate the movie. When we do things, we
\ndo them with an all-or-nothing approach,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Taking a break from the skateboarding and in-line skating area
\nare two American skateboarders living in Jakarta. They have come
\nto skate the only indoor ramp in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"It's cool,\" exclaimed Adam and Bryan, both 14. \"We usually
\nhave to build our own ramps,\" continued Bryan, who is considering
\nentering one of the competitions held every weekend. An indoor
\nramp is great they said, remembering a week when it \"rained every
\nday after school\".<\/p>\n
The two skaters wished the ramp was permanent though, and that
\nthe skate area was larger, reflecting the need for a new skate
\npark in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Claud, 20, who has been skating for four years, is a resident
\ndaily skater at the mall. \"Skateboarding is becoming very popular
\nin Indonesia,\" he said. \"It is good to have a ramp, it helps
\npeople start skating.\"<\/p>\n
Local and international professionals are also scheduled to
\nappear for demonstration events in the future.<\/p>\n
Supervising guests at the indoor climbing wall is experienced
\nclimber Angkie, 23, a member of the Wall Climbing Federation of
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
\"People are very enthusiastic and interested,\" she said, \"more
\nthan 200 people have tried wall climbing for the first time in
\nthe past two weeks. At first most people are curious, because
\nthey have never tried it, but then they come back for more\".<\/p>\n
The indoor wall is very popular, and according to Angkie this
\nmirrors the sport's rapid increase in popularity in Indonesia
\nover the last two years.<\/p>\n
The program at the indoor climbing wall includes supervised
\nclimbing, ongoing competitions and demonstrations from
\nexperienced climbers. People of all ages have been climbing the
\nwall said Angkie, from \"5 years to over 30 years\".<\/p>\n
Meanwhile on the third level of the mall, people are skating
\nalso, but on ice. Sky Rink, a permanent ice-skating rink, is
\nabuzz with people taking lessons and skating to the sounds of
\nfunky music in a blur of colors.<\/p>\n
Yola, 15, said, \"I have been coming here for a week. It's
\nfantastic, there are instructors who help you, and the atmosphere
\nis really cool.\"<\/p>\n
A visit to Taman Anggrek Mall during the celebration
\nrepresents a day out for the whole family. \"We are a family-
\norientated mall,\" said Rezianni.<\/p>\n
For children who have seen the movie there are numerous
\nactivities to burn off the inevitable energy and motivation
\ninspired by the action-orientated character Tarzan. Families can
\nalso have a photo taken with Disney's Tarzan background,
\nparticipate in \"family fun\" activities such as tent building, and
\nshop at the Tarzan merchandise stalls.<\/p>\n
The Nadjaya family, currently visiting Jakarta from Sumatra,
\nare enjoying themselves. \"You can bring your children here during
\nthe holidays,\" said father Feryanto. \"There are lots of games and
\nthings to do.\"<\/p>\n
The activities usually run from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays,
\nand 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.<\/p>\n
Taman Anggrek Mall has also concentrated on issues of safety.
\nExperienced supervisors are present to ensure that participants
\nare safe, beginners are instructed correctly and safety standards
\nare enforced. The mall has first-aid practitioners available and
\nthere have been no accidents to date.<\/p>\n
The height of the indoor climbing wall is deliberately less
\nthan the usual 12 meters, and although the ideal skate ramp
\nusually extends four or five meters vertically, the ramp at the
\nmall has been restricted to two meters.<\/p>\n
With a few exceptions, such as the ice skating, the entire
\nfestival is free. Considering the activities available and the
\natmosphere the mall has created, the celebration of the new
\nTarzan movie offers a great day out for Jakarta families. Taman
\nAnggrek Mall, located in West Jakarta, has created an environment
\nTarzan himself would feel at home in, so swing on down there with
