        "content": "<p>Tarakanita College produces new secretaries<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Joy and happiness filled the faces of 877<br>\nTarakanita Secretarial College students at their graduation day<br>\nat the Jakarta Convention Center Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Happiness also filled their families' faces. As soon as the<br>\nceremony closed, relatives rushed to congratulate graduates.<\/p>\n<p>\"I feel very happy because I've officially finished at<br>\ncollege,\" said one graduate, who had already worked as a<br>\nsecretary in a private bank for over a year.<\/p>\n<p>Also present were the college's director Sister Francino<br>\nHarianja and legislator J. Siberu, who gave a keynote speech<br>\ntitled The Quality of Human Resources in Facing Challenges in<br>\nGlobalization Era.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the graduates completed their studies in 1992, six in<br>\n1993, six in 1994, 374 in 1995 and the remaining 489 finished<br>\nthis year.<\/p>\n<p>Data shows 722 have already worked in private companies like<br>\nbanks, airlines, publishers, television stations, real estates<br>\nagencies, embassies and hotels.<\/p>\n<p>Tarakanita Foundation chairwoman Sister Antari Mursiwi warned<br>\ngraduates that graduation was not their destination.<\/p>\n<p>\"New graduates should make this event a starting point to<br>\nbecome professional secretaries,\" Antari said.<\/p>\n<p>The college, founded in 1968, is one of Jakarta's oldest<br>\nsecretarial colleges. It has between 500 and 600 students and<br>\nabout 400 graduate annually.<\/p>\n<p>The college offers two diploma programs: a one-year program<br>\nfor office secretaries, and a three-year program for directors'<br>\nsecretaries.<\/p>\n<p>Francino said the a one-year diploma was for simple<br>\nsecretarial jobs, while the three-year program aimed to produce<br>\nsecretaries capable of accompanying their bosses on more<br>\nimportant jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The number of the college's graduates is still low compared to<br>\nthe number of from secretarial courses in the city because most<br>\ncourses offer short programs ranging from six months to a year.<\/p>\n<p>However, the head of the Indonesian Association of Secretaries<br>\n(ISI) Dewi Margono complained about the quality of many<br>\nsecretaries. \"They cannot even type addresses onto envelopes.\"<\/p>\n<p>The association plans to survey the quality of several<br>\nsecretarial institutes.
