Tanri Abeng launches book<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former state minister for state enterprises
\nTanri Abeng (pictured above signing his book for a buyer) sees
\nthe privatization of state companies as essential for fueling
\neconomic recovery, not so much for the capital flowing in but
\nmore because of the market confidence resulting from the process.<\/p>\n
\"Foreign capital flowing through the sales of state
\nenterprises is much more effective in building market confidence
\nin the country than funds derived from loans from the World Bank
\nor International Monetary Fund,\" Tanri noted on Saturday.<\/p>\n
This was because capital coming in through privatization was
\nprivate investment driven by market forces, while loan funds from
\nmultilateral institutions was based on a combination of political
\nand diplomatic considerations and the government's compliance
\nwith the loan conditions, he added.<\/p>\n
Tanri was speaking at the launching of his book entitled
\nIndonesia Inc. which chronicles his experiences in restructuring
\nmore than 144 state companies between March, 1998 and October,
\n1999 under both the Soeharto and B.J. Habibie administrations.<\/p>\n
The book, published by Time Academic Papers, tells of the
\nproblems he encountered in pushing through the reform of state
\ncompanies amid the competing agendas of generating revenues for
\nthe state budget and laying the foundations for a more efficient
\nand accountable public sector.<\/p>\n
It also deals with the slippery path he trod in coping with
\nthe vested interest groups who fought to maintain the state
\ncompanies as their cash cows.<\/p>",
