The Regional Facilitators (Fasda) Perubahan of the Tanoto Foundation\nhas introduced engaging ways to learn literacy and numeracy in Dumai,\nRiau. According to Antara, these efforts are carried out through various\ninnovative projects that utilise learning approaches closely connected\nto students\u2019 daily lives.<\/p>\n
The implementation of these learning activities took place at SMPN 14\nDumai using the Lesson Study method with a Realistic Mathematics\nEducation (RME) approach. The Head of SMPN 14 Dumai, Rudi Candra, stated\nthat training had previously been conducted for teachers from schools\nacross Dumai. Each school sent one teacher to participate in the\ntraining, which was subsequently followed by dissemination or the\nsharing of practices with other teachers within their respective\nschools.<\/p>\n
The results of the training were implemented through a lesson study\nconsisting of three stages: plan, do, and see. The \u2018plan\u2019 stage involved\ncollaborative lesson planning, while the \u2018do\u2019 stage involved the actual\nteaching practice.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday we entered the \u2018do\u2019 stage. Previously, they had discussed and\nprepared the lesson plans. After this activity is complete, they will\nproceed to the \u2018see\u2019 stage, or reflection, to identify what has\nsucceeded and what has not,\u201d said Rudi.<\/p>\n
The RME approach applied in mathematics learning stems from problems\nencountered by students in everyday life. In this particular practice,\nteachers used the activity of wrapping gifts as a context for learning\nto help students understand the concept of the surface area of a\ncuboid.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom that problem, the children measured and performed the activity\nthemselves. From there, they discovered the formula for the surface area\nof a cubative and then calculated how much wrapping paper was required,\u201d\nRudi explained.<\/p>\n
This approach is expected to change students\u2019 perceptions of\nmathematics, which is often regarded as difficult and boring. The\nlearning is designed so that students can understand concepts through\nreal experiences rather than merely memorising formulas.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Project Management Unit of the Tanoto Foundation,\nYusriwiati Yose, stated that Fasda Perubahan serves as a space for\nregional facilitators to develop innovative solutions tailored to the\nneeds and potential of their respective regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cFasda Perubahan is an opportunity to address literacy and numeracy\nchallenges in the regions. Through this project, Fasda is encouraged to\nbecome agents of change capable of producing innovations to improve\nliteracy and numeracy based on local contexts,\u201d said Yusriwiati.<\/p>\n
For the Riau region, the 2026 Fasda Perubahan Project targets three\nareas: Dumai City, Pekanbaru City, and Bengkalis Regency. Specifically\nin Dumai, there are three projects: Gemilang, which focuses on utilising\nlocal tourism potential to strengthen teacher literacy and numeracy;\nEduCore Numeracy, through teacher collaboration in RME Lesson Study; and\nAnre Beraksi, through the Guided Literacy Movement (GLITTER).<\/p>\n
