        "content": "<p>Tanjung Priok case gets prosecutors<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The Attorney General&apos;s Office has appointed 14<br>\nprosecutors to handle the case of the 1984 Tanjung Priok shooting<br>\nincident in which at least 33 people died.<\/p>\n<p>At least 14 active and retired military officers, including<br>\nthe incumbent commander of the Army&apos;s Special Forces (Kopassus),<br>\nMaj. Gen. Sriyanto, have been named suspects in the case.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 12, 1984 soldiers opened fire on antigovernment<br>\nprotesters outside the Tanjung Priok mosque in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The shooting left 33 dead and 55 injured, according to a probe<br>\nby the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM). Families<br>\nof victims say the number of casualties was much higher.<\/p>\n<p>Sriyanto headed the North Jakarta military operation at the<br>\ntime.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General&apos;s Office spokesman Antasari Azhar said<br>\nthat most of the 14 prosecutors had handled the prosecution in<br>\nthe East Timor human rights tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They have had experience with cases on gross human rights<br>\nabuses at the ad hoc human rights tribunal,&quot; he said, referring<br>\nto the special court set up to try gross human rights violations.<\/p>\n<p>Around 1,000 East Timorese died in the violence that followed<br>\nEast Timor&apos;s vote to separate from Indonesia in 1999. The United<br>\nNations blamed military-backed militias for the violence.<\/p>\n<p>The tribunal acquitted almost all military and police figures<br>\nwho stood trial for the East Timor violence.
