TANGERANG: Two professional boxers who beat a pedicab driver
\nwere forced to flee for their lives after 200 less-than-happy
\nfriends of the victim invaded a boxing training camp in Tangerang
\non Thursday.<\/p>\n
Samin, a becak (three-wheeled pedicab driver), said his
\npedicab collided with a motorcycle driven by the boxers near the
\nTangerang Benteng Sport stadium on Jl. TMP Taruna at 11 p.m. on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
\"The boxers asked for money from me as compensation for the
\ndamage to their motorcycle. As a pedicab driver, I certainly have
\nno money to pay for the compensation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The two boxers became angry and beat him up. They fled after
\nseveral other pedicab drivers intervened.<\/p>\n
About two hours later, 200 angry pedicab drivers stormed the
\nstadium, forcing all the boxers to flee. There were no reported

\nThree embassies organize charity bazaar

JAKARTA: The embassies of Algeria, Russia and Turkey are
\norganizing a joint charity bazaar at the residence of the Russian
\nAmbassador on Jl. Karet Pedurenan, Kuningan, South Jakarta, on
\nNov. 28.<\/p>\n
The bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to
\nthe public without a cover charge, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Handicrafts, porcelain, jewelry and other products from the

\nDrilling permit hampered by lack of bylaw

TANGERANG: Illegal underground drilling is rampant in the
\nabsence of effective bylaws in the Tangerang muncipality.<\/p>\n
Chief of the municipal environmental agency, M. Akip, admitted
\nThursday that hundred of industrial firms had illegally drilled
\ndeep wells.<\/p>\n
He said that though the agency could issue permits for
\nunderground drilling, there were no bylaws that stipulated the
\ndrilling permit application process.<\/p>\n
The situation has confused contractors, who wish to abide by
\nthe law.<\/p>\n
\"I want to abide by the law and that's why I applied for the
\npermit before taking contracts or ground water drilling
\nprojects,\" drilling contractor Bambang Sumitro said.<\/p>\n
He said the permits were issued by the Directorate of
\nEnvironmental Management Geology (GTL) in Bandung before regional
\nautonomy took effect in January 2000.<\/p>\n
Unlike the municipality, the Tangerang regency has no problems
\nrelated to the issuance of ground water drilling permits.<\/p>\n
Pahala Sirait, chief of ground water at the regional
\nenvironmental agency said the regency administration had issued
\nbylaw No. 6\/2002 on ground water use.<\/p>\n
\"The bylaw was approved by the regency council in July and now
\nwe are ready to serve contractors who want to apply for ground
\nwater drilling permits,\" he said. --JP<\/p>",
