Tangerang needs pedestrian bridges<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): The Tangerang Public Works Office wants the
\nprivate sector to assist in building pedestrian bridges in the
\ntownship because the administration has a very limited budget.<\/p>\n
\"To fulfill the need for pedestrian bridges the office has
\ninvited the private sector to build them,\" Komarudin, the office
\nchief, said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Komarudin told The Jakarta Post the offer will profit
\nbusinessmen because they can advertise their products on the
\nbridges they construct.<\/p>\n
Komarudin said that the presence of pedestrian bridges is very
\nimportant to help reduce the high rate of traffic accidents
\ninvolving pedestrians in the township.<\/p>\n
Komarudin said the limited budget is not the only factor
\nhampering the construction of pedestrian bridges by his office.
\nThe scarcity of land for the construction of the bridges is a
\nproblem as well.<\/p>\n
Komarudin said that the office is now planning to construct
\nsix pedestrian bridges in a number of locations: Jl. Daan Mogot,
\nJl. Merdeka, Jl. Otista, Pujalidane park, the Cimone area and
\nnear the Cikokol bus terminal.<\/p>\n
In order to facilitate road crossing, the Tangerang Police
\nChief, Lt. Col. R. Hari Setyabudhi, said that the police have
\ncrossing signs, which can be carried by pedestrians when they are
\nwalking across busy roads.<\/p>\n
The crossing signs are made of wood and iron sheeting. They
\nare decorated with pictures of cartoon characters in striking and
\nvibrant colors, which are sure to attract the attention of
\nmotorists.<\/p>\n
The signs are available at some crosswalks. The signs are
\nmeant to warn the motorists to slow down. They should be placed
\non the other side of the road after the crossing.<\/p>\n
According to one Tangerang resident, the signs boost courage
\nwhen pedestrians are crossing the roads, even though they may not
