Tangerang mobs kill five thieves<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Five men believed to be notorious thieves
\nspecializing in stealing motorcycles in Tangerang were beaten to
\ndeath by angry residents in three different incidents in the
\nearly hours of Sunday.<\/p>\n
Tangerang Police chief Lt. Col. Pudji Hartanto Iskandar
\nconfirmed the cases but did not reveal whether the police had
\narrested any of the locals.<\/p>\n
Pudji was quoted by Antara as saying that the five victims
\nwere Hidayat, Hasanudin, Haris I Kusuma, Ipong Kijen and Daniel,
\naged between 18 and 36.<\/p>\n
The first two were identified as residents of Labuhan
\nMaringgai district in Lampung, Sumatra, while the others \"lived
\nin the area\", the officer said.<\/p>\n
The five victims were caught red-handed attempting to steal
\nmotorcycles, Pudji explained, adding that they were all on the
\nlocal police's most wanted list.<\/p>\n
\"Daniel, for instance, had been under surveillance for quite a
\nlong time because locals feared him.<\/p>\n
Our records state that he had stolen at least eight
\nmotorcycles from residents,\" the officer said without further
\nexplanation.<\/p>\n
Daniel was shot in the leg and then pummeled to death by
\nJatiuwung residents after he beat a motorcycle driver on Jl.
\nBayur and tried to speed away with the bike at around 1:20 a.m.
\non Sunday.<\/p>\n
According to Pudji, the suspect approached his victim, a
\nfactory worker, and pretended to ask for an address in the area.<\/p>\n
\"The victim who had just left work hastily stopped his
\nmotorcycle and prepared to assist Daniel when the latter suddenly
\nstruck him and grabbed the bike,\" the officer said.<\/p>\n
A police officer witnessed the incident and fired warning
\nshots to stop Daniel. Realizing that these were being ignored,
\nthe officer aimed his gun at the suspect's leg.<\/p>\n
\"Aware of the incident, locals rushed out of their houses and
\nbadly beat Daniel. The dying suspect finally lost his life on the
\nway to Tangerang General Hospital,\" Pudji said.<\/p>\n
Blockade<\/p>\n
Almost at the same time, residents of Pekayon village in
\nCipondoh got on their motorcycles, and chased two men -- Hidayat
\nand Hasanudin -- who they saw stealing a motorcycle that belonged
\nto a local, he said.<\/p>\n
The two were blocked and then attacked by the angry mob, Pudji
\nadded.<\/p>\n
The police arrived at the scene several minutes later but only
\nin time to take the two dying suspects to the hospital.<\/p>\n
Hidayat and Hasanudin both died a few minutes after they
\narrived at the hospital, he said.<\/p>\n
At 2:10 a.m., residents of Kayu Gede village in Serpong
\nattacked Haris and Ipong, who were also spotted grabbing a
\nmotorcycle, Pudji said.<\/p>\n
The deaths of the five criminals by mobs in a single day in
\nTangerang, west of here, is thought to be the first time so many
\nkillings have happened in the area.<\/p>\n
Officer Pudji strongly urged the local residents to stop
\nenforcing such \"jungle law\" as it would leave the police in no
\nposition to investigate thefts.<\/p>\n
He stressed that people should immediately hand over anyone
\ncaught stealing to the police.<\/p>\n
\"If the thieves die, the police cannot build the case because
\nthe link has been cut,\" Pudji said. (bsr)<\/p>",
