Tangerang looks into proposed municipality<\/p>\n

Responding to public demands for the establishment of a Cipasera
\nmunicipality in Banten, the Tangerang council and regent, Ismet
\nIskandar, have called for a thorough study into the proposal.<\/p>\n
\"An objective study must be conducted by an independent team
\nto determine whether or not the six districts in question can be
\nmerged into one municipality,\" Tangerang council deputy speaker
\nArief Wahyudi said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Public pressure has been increasing for the establishment of
\nCipasera municipality, which would comprise Ciputat, Pamulang,
\nSerpong, Pondok Aren, Cisauk and Pagedangan districts in Banten.<\/p>\n
\"We will not reject the idea if it is truly the wish of the
\npeople. The council suggests that a thorough study be conducted
\nand it should cover all aspects of life in the six districts,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Currently, the six districts are part of Tangerang Regency,
\nand are believed to contribute up to 40 percent of Tangerang's Rp
\n369 billion (US$41 million) in annual revenue.<\/p>\n
Regent Ismet, meanwhile, said that the setting up of Cipasera
\nmunicipality must be based on the wishes of the people so that
\nthe management of the new city would be really aimed at improving
\npublic welfare and well-being.<\/p>\n
\"There are numerous aspects that need to be taken into account
\nin relation to attempts to merge the six districts into a new
\ntown,\" he said without elaborating.<\/p>\n
The establishment of a new province, regency or municipality
\nmust be based on a law deliberated and endorsed by the House of
\nRepresentatives.<\/p>\n
The Post observed on Saturday that residents of the six
\ndistricts were still divided over the idea of establishing a new
\nmunicipality.<\/p>\n
Those who want to establish the new municipality express their
\nsupport though stickers reading Cipasera Kotaku (Cipasera is my
\ntown). The stickers could, for example, be seen on public
\ntransportation minivans operating in the six districts.<\/p>\n
Those who oppose the idea, however, express their rejection
\nthrough banners reading Belum saatnya Ciputat, Pamulang, Serpong
\nPondok Aren pisah dari Tangerang (It's not the time for Ciputat,
\nPamulang, Serpong, Pondok Aren, Ciasuk and Pagedangan to split
\nfrom Tangerang.<\/p>\n
Hidayat Suhali, secretary-general of the Joint Committee for
\nthe Establishment of Cipasera Municipality, said the committee,
\nalong with the coordinating body for the establishment of
\nCipasera municipality, had conducted a study into the proposal,
\nwhich he said showed that Cipasera was capable of becoming a
\nmunicipality.<\/p>\n
\"The only major thing that Cipasera lacks is a five-star
\nhotel,\" he told the Post.<\/p>",
