Tangerang gets new regent for 2003\/2008<\/p>\n

At the council building in the Tangerang regency capital of
\nTigaraksa on Thursday, the legislative council elected Ismet
\nIskandar as the new regent of Tangerang for the 2003-2008 term
\nand Norodom Sukarno as his deputy regent.<\/p>\n
Ismet Iskandar is currently the secretary to the Tangerang
\nregency administration, and Norodom Sukarno is the chairman of
\nthe regency branch of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
\n(PDI Perjuangan).<\/p>\n
Ismet was nominated by the Nation Awakening Party (PKB) and
\nthe Nahdlatul Ummat Party (PNU) factions, while Norodom was
\nnominated by a number of councillors from the PDI Perjuangan
\nfaction. The pair received a total of 23 of 43 votes.<\/p>\n
Besides Ismet Iskandar and Norodom, five other pairs of
\ncandidates contested the election.<\/p>\n
Forty-five councillors attended the election but only 43 cast
\nvotes, with the other two councillors abstaining.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of police officers were deployed around the council
\nbuilding to safeguard the proceedings, but were still unable to
\nprevent a clash between supporters of rival candidates.<\/p>\n
The conflict was caused by a split in the PDI Perjuangan
\nfaction between those councillors supporting the ticket with
\nNorodom as deputy regent and those supporting the ticket
\ncontaining Doddy Anshory as regent.<\/p>\n
One car was damaged during the fracas but no injuries were
\nreported.<\/p>\n
After the election, Ismet said he would continue with the
\ndevelopment programs of his predecessor.<\/p>\n
Mas Iman Kusnandar, secretary of the election committee, said
\nthe public had until March 5 to express their views and opinions
\non the election of the new regent and deputy regent.<\/p>\n
He said the new regent had to be installed in office before
\nMarch 22, when outgoing regent Agus Djunara ends his term.<\/p>",
