        "content": "<p>Tangerang council approves 15 percent budget hike<\/p>\n<p>TANGERANG (JP): Tangerang City Council approved last week a 15 <br>\npercent increase in the city's 2001 budget from a proposed Rp 217 <br>\nbillion (US$25.53 million) to Rp 261 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The increase was smaller than the 19.25 percent proposed by <br>\nthe municipal administration on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n<p>Tangerang Mayor H.M. Thamrin said that his administration <br>\nproposed the increase after considering the uncertain factors <br>\nfacing the city, and potential sources that could be tapped to <br>\nfund the budget.<\/p>\n<p>Council spokesman Gian Sugiarsono, who chaired the plenary <br>\nmeeting on the budget increase, said the budget's routine <br>\nexpenses increased by Rp 33 billion, up from Rp 176.5 billion to <br>\nRp 209.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the National Development Party faction, Sanny <br>\nMahmoed, stated that higher increases in development expenses <br>\nrather than routine expenses indicated that the administration <br>\nwas serious about improving its services to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, chairman of the Golkar Party faction, M.A. Chosim <br>\nemphasized that the administration should improve its services, <br>\nparticularly those concerning education and general public needs.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the Madani faction, Waisulkorni Mufti, <br>\nsuggested that Mayor Thamrin improve the supervision of the <br>\nbudget so that it can be spent in ways most beneficial to the <br>\npublic.
