Tangerang braces for killing spree<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): About 600 noncommissioned law enforcement
\nofficers, along with local residents, have been alerted to
\nanticipate a possible mysterious killing spree of sorcerers,
\nlocally known as dukun santet.<\/p>\n
\"The officers are on the alert to help safeguard the city from
\nany possible killing spree after it was reported to have spread
\nfrom East Java to Central and West Java,\" Lt. Col. Meris Wiryadi,
\nTangerang military district commander, was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Meris said that the officers' alertness was aimed at improving
\npublic self-defense following the death of a sorcerer in Serang,
\nWest Java, last week after being ambushed by an angry mob.<\/p>\n
He explained that the self-defense movement had been
\nintensified in areas bordering Serang, including Kronjo, Balaraja
\nand Cisoka districts.<\/p>\n
Meris urged local residents to be watchful of any guests
\ncoming to their villages during the night and to directly ask
\ntheir identities.<\/p>\n
Based on experience in Banyuwangi, one of the areas hardest
\nhit by the killing spree, he said empowering local people to help
\nmaintain security constituted an effective way of preventing it
\nfrom spreading further.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, H. Harry Mulya Zein, spokesman of the Tangerang
\nregency, said that a number of sorcerers were believed to have
\nbeen operating in areas including Cipete, Poris Plawad, Tanah
