Tangerang asks EU's help on pollution issues<\/p>\n

The Tangerang regency administration is seeking the assistance of
\nthe European Union to help deal with devastating environmental
\nproblems, including severe river pollution caused by industrial
\nwaste and coastal erosion.<\/p>\n
Regent Ismet Iskandar said that he had delivered the proposal
\nto visiting representatives from the European Union Parliament in
\nthe hope of working in cooperation with individual EU member
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
\"The cooperation framework includes dealing with coastal
\nerosion, the development of slum fishing villages, riverbank
\nmanagement and environment monitoring,\" he said recently.<\/p>\n
Ismet said representatives from the Netherlands had promised
\nto help address erosion problems while representatives from
\nseveral other countries would help deal with river pollution.<\/p>\n
\"As much as 70 percent of our 51-kilometer coastline faces
\ncontinuous erosion while Karang Serang village had been eroded
\nfor a length of 200 meters to 1,000 meters per year,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The administration has begun to monitor regularly the
\nCisadane, Cirarab and Cimanceuri rivers, which have been heavily
\npolluted by industrial waste.<\/p>\n
Separately, head of the regency's environmental management
\nagency Deden Sugandhi said only 29 of 120 industrial firms, whose
\nwaste samples had been checked, had installed proper waste
\ntreatment facilities.<\/p>\n
He added that his agency had found high levels of mercury in
\nrivers flowing through the regency.<\/p>\n
To cope with these problems, the administration plans to build
\nseveral integrated waste treatment facilities, with a priority in
\nindustrial zones.<\/p>\n
\"This is only a short-term solution. Small-scale factories can
\nuse the facilities as well,\" Deden said.<\/p>\n
He added the agency was still preparing the engineering design
\nfor the waste treatment facilities.<\/p>",
