Aritonang said<br>\nSaturday that the police had brought the chaotic situation at the<br>\nTanah Abang market, which was the scene of a riot Friday, under<br>\ncontrol.<\/p>\n<p>The unrest was caused by dozens of angry hoodlums who<br>\nblockaded one of nearby streets and threw anything they could lay<br>\ntheir hands on at officers who had arrested eight of their<br>\nfriends for gambling, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the police persuaded the angry hoodlums to stop<br>\nventing their anger on innocent vendors and other people around<br>\nthem.<\/p>\n<p>Street vendors operating near the market panicked and tried to<br>\nsave their merchandise and belongings when the hoodlums began<br>\nthrowing things at them.<\/p>\n<p>Shop attendants and employees from nearby offices ran away to<br>\navoid becoming innocent victims of the riot.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No one was arrested in Friday&apos;s incident. The hoodlums<br>\nstopped rioting not long after the Central Jakarta police arrived<br>\nat the site and cleaned up the mess in the street,&quot; Aritonang<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Aritonang said the eight hoodlums who were caught gambling at<br>\nthe market site were being held for further questioning.<\/p>\n<p>He said the arrests were carried out in response to city<br>\ncouncilors&apos; criticism of the mushrooming gambling in Tanah Abang<br>\nmarket.<\/p>\n<p>Councilors from commission A for public order and security had<br>\nvisited the market Thursday and witnessed many hoodlums gambling<br>\nin and around the market.<\/p>\n<p>All gambling is prohibited by law.
