Taman Mini celebrates its 20th anniversary<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesia-in-Miniature Park is currently
\nholding a series of Indonesian traditional arts attractions,
\nuntil April 23, to commemorate its 20th anniversary.<\/p>\n
The 10-day festivity was officially inaugurated by State
\nMinister of Women's Roles Mien Sugandhi by opening a fair on
\nIndonesian food on Friday morning, at the Sasono Langen Budoyo
\nbuilding.<\/p>\n
Located near the Halim Perdanakusuma in East Jakarta, the
\npark, locally known as Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, was built
\nunder the initiative of First Lady Tien Soeharto, and opened on
\nApril 20, 1975.<\/p>\n
The park's anniversary will be presided over by President
\nSoeharto on April 20, along with the inauguration of the new
\nElectric and New Energy Museum built inside the park.<\/p>\n
The food fair opened by Minister Sugandhi, entitled I Love
\nIndonesian Food, ended yesterday at the Sasono Adiguno building.<\/p>\n
During the 10-day festivities, the park will hold wayang
\npuppet shows and Ketoprak, a Javanese drama depicting historical
\nevents.<\/p>\n
Last Saturday evening the park held a puppet show, which
\nlasted the whole night, at the Tugu Api Pancasila plaza.<\/p>\n
The show revealed the traditional story of Banjaran Wisanggeni
\nand was presented by puppeteer Ki Manteb Sudharsono.<\/p>\n
A puppet show on the story of Kumbakarna Pralaya will be
\nstaged at the West Java pavilion by noted puppeteer Asep Sunarya
\non April 20.<\/p>\n
The following day, puppeteer Ki Hadi Sugito will present the
\nstory about Semar Mejang Tirtomoyo at the Electricity and New
\nEnergy Museum.<\/p>\n
On the same day, the Gobyok Campusari ketoprak group will
\npresent a story entitled Aryo Penangsang.<\/p>\n
The climax of the anniversary will be held at the Tugu Api
\nPancasila plaza on April 20, with several noted artists and
\ncomedians expected to entertain visitors.<\/p>\n
Project<\/p>\n
In the early stages of its construction, the park project was
\nattacked by critics, who accused that the project would only be
\nthe waste of a huge amount of money.<\/p>\n
Moreover, some residents claimed that their land, at that
\nsite, had been acquired by the project operators through illegal
\nprocedures.<\/p>\n
Today the critics have been proven wrong as thousands of
\npeople, particularly those from lower-income families, visit the
\npark every day, and especially on public holidays.<\/p>\n
Unlike the exclusive foreign-oriented Fantasy World in Ancol,
\nNorth Jakarta, the Indonesian-in-Miniature park offers a variety
\nof attractions from each of Indonesia's 27 provinces.<\/p>\n
Each province has a replica of its own traditional house in
\nthe park, sometimes turning the park into a town of school
\nchildren, who are assigned to learn the customs of other
