Taiwan to simplify customs procedures<\/p>\n

Taiwan aims to simplify customs clearance procedures with more
\nSoutheast Asian nations, the island's Ministry of Economic
\nAffairs said Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Taiwan has signed temporary clearance agreements with
\nSingapore and the Philippines, and aims to forge similar
\nagreements with Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.<\/p>\n
Temporary clearance permits, valid for a year, are designed to
\nsimplify the export\/import clearance process. They can be used
\nfor personal luggage clearance and unaccompanied luggage like
\ngeneral cargo, according to the Taipei Customs Bureau.<\/p>\n
The ministry is planning a trip to several Southeast Asian
\ncountries soon, it said in a statement, but didn't specify the
\ncountries. Economic Minister Lin Yi-fu will lead the delegation,
\nwhich will also include other government officials and Taiwanese
\nbusinessmen.<\/p>\n
The trip is aimed at getting a clearer picture of Taiwan's
\ninvestments in Southeast Asia, and to help Taiwanese investors
\nthere solve their problems, the ministry said.<\/p>\n
Taiwan's government is encouraging investments to Southeast
\nAsia in an effort to prevent Taiwanese investors from becoming
\noverly reliant on China, which has surpassed the U.S. to become
\nthe island's biggest export destination.<\/p>\n
In the first five months of this year, 23.5 percent of
\nTaiwan's exports went to China, the ministry said. That is higher
\nthan 20.6 percent taken up by the U.S.<\/p>",
