Taiwan reviews bilateral programs with Indonesia<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Dow Jones): Taiwan is in the process of reviewing a
\n200,000-ton rice deal with Indonesia, along with other bilateral
\nprograms, in view of anti-Chinese incidents that occurred during
\nthe May riots in Indonesia, Roy Y. Wu, spokesman for Taiwan's
\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs told Dow Jones Newswires yesterday.<\/p>\n
To help it avoid a looming food crisis, Taiwan had earlier
\nagreed to ship Indonesia the rice under a loan agreement.<\/p>\n
But the \"unfortunate (anti-Chinese) incidents\" that occurred
\nduring Indonesia's social unrest in May has led Taiwan to review
\nits bilateral programs with Indonesia, Wu said.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of ethnic Chinese women in Indonesia are said to have
\nbeen raped or killed during the social unrest.<\/p>\n
\"We are watching closely the situation in Indonesia and
\ncontinue to review all our bilateral cooperation programs,
\nincluding the rice project,\" said Wu. \"We attach great importance
\nto the mutually beneficial relations with Indonesia. On the other
\nhand, we're very much concerned about the safety and well-being
\nof our people in Indonesia.\"<\/p>\n
He also said Taiwan is monitoring the actions of the
\nIndonesian task force set up in mid-July to investigate the
\nreported rapes that occurred in May.<\/p>\n
\"We hope the task force will carry out its goal of uncovering
\nthe criminals and bringing them to justice. And in the meantime,
\nto reinforce the protection of our ethnic Chinese there,\" said
\nWu.<\/p>\n
Wu declined to say if Taiwan's decision on the rice shipment
\nmostly hinges on the results of the task force.
\nHe also refused to comment on further details regarding the rice
\ndeal.<\/p>\n
Another Minister of Foreign Affairs source said Taiwan hasn't
\ncommitted to paper its agreement for the rice deal with
\nIndonesia.<\/p>",
