China\u2019s Ministry of Defence has stated that one of its warships and\nan Indonesian frigate will conduct a \u2018joint sailing exercise\u2019 to the\neast of Taiwan.<\/p>\n
The activity is said to \u2018enhance the combined operational\ncapabilities of the two navies\u2019 and \u2018jointly safeguard peace and\nstability in the region\u2019.<\/p>\n
In response, the Taiwanese government has condemned China\u2019s planned\nexercise, calling it \u2018dangerous\u2019. Taipei says Beijing is attempting to\ncreate a false impression among the international community that it\ncontrols those waters.<\/p>\n
China regards Taiwan, which has a democratic government, as its\nterritory. In June 2026, Beijing began coastguard patrols off the east\ncoast of the Taipei-administered territory. The move sparked anger in\nTaiwan and concern in the United States and other Western countries.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday (11\/08), China\u2019s Ministry of Defence stated that the\nexercise would take place in mid-August at an unspecified location east\nof Taiwan. The activity is a \u2018navigation exercise\u2019 with an Indonesian\nnavy vessel. The move is considered highly unusual because China\ngenerally does not hold joint military exercises with foreign forces\nnear Taiwan.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday evening, Taiwan\u2019s Mainland Affairs Council, the body\nresponsible for policy towards China, stated that the exercise\nconstituted a \u2018military provocation\u2019 and that Beijing should\n\u2018immediately cease this dangerous behaviour that undermines the status\nquo\u2019.<\/p>\n
In its statement, the council said China is now seeking to hold joint\nexercises with \u2018relevant countries\u2019 in waters east of Taiwan. The move\nfollows a series of recent Chinese actions, including activities Taiwan\ndescribes as \u2018routine law enforcement patrols\u2019 in the\nTaipei-administered territory.<\/p>\n
\u2018This is, in fact, political manipulation, an action that is merely\nnominal but in reality constitutes expansion, aimed at creating a false\nimpression before the international community that communist China has\njurisdiction over the waters east of Taiwan,\u2019 the council said.<\/p>\n
The council also stressed that Taiwan would continue to closely\nmonitor developments in its surrounding region and take \u2018necessary and\nappropriate measures\u2019.<\/p>\n
Regarding the reported China-Indonesia joint exercise, the Reuters\nand AFP news agencies said there had been no response from the\nIndonesian Navy or Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n
DW Indonesia has also sought clarification from the Ministry of\nDefence. However, there had been no response at the time this article\nwas published.<\/p>\n
Taiwan is currently holding its annual Han Kuang military exercises,\nin which it simulates how to repel a Chinese attack.<\/p>\n
China\u2019s announcement came as US Deputy Under Secretary of Defence for\nPolicy Elbridge Colby met Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie\nSjamsoeddin in Jakarta on Tuesday (11\/08).<\/p>\n
Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin told Colby that expanded defence cooperation was\nnot aimed at establishing US military bases in Indonesia, according to a\nstatement from Indonesia\u2019s Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n
China does not recognise the Taiwanese government\u2019s sovereignty\nclaims, and Beijing\u2019s military operates almost daily around Taipei.<\/p>\n
Like most countries, Indonesia has no formal diplomatic relations\nwith Taiwan, but the island is home to more than 300,000 Indonesian\nmigrant workers.<\/p>\n
