        "content": "<p>Istanbul (ANTARA) - Syria said on Thursday (21 May) that it has\njoined a global initiative aimed at strengthening political commitment\nto international humanitarian law and described the move as an\nadministration\u2019s effort to broaden responsible engagement with the\ninternational community.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that Syria\u2019s\npermanent representative to the UN, Ibrahum Olabi, handed over the\ninstrument of accession during a meeting with the President of the\nInternational Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric Egger.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said the move reflects Damascus\u2019s commitment to\ninternational law and humanitarian law through practical steps and\nactive diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>It added that the decision honours the suffering and sacrifices of\nthe Syrian people caused by \u2018grave and systematic\u2019 violations carried\nout by the previous regime.<\/p>\n<p>According to the ministry, Syria\u2019s participation aims to support\ninternational efforts to strengthen adherence to humanitarian law,\nprotect civilians, reduce human suffering, and uphold the principles of\nhumanity during armed conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Damascus also stated its readiness to contribute responsibly and\nconstructively to the process through multilateral cooperation and\ncloser coordination with international partners, notably the\nInternational Committee of the Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Human rights have long been one of the most controversial issues in\nSyria\u2019s international relations, where UN bodies and human rights\norganisations have repeatedly accused the previous regime of arbitrary\ndetention, systematic torture, and enforced disappearances.<\/p>\n<p>Under Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, the\ncountry faced widespread allegations of systematic violations and\nattacks on civilians.<\/p>\n<p>Assad fled to Russia in December 2024, ending decades of Baath Party\nrule that began in 1963.<\/p>\n<p>The transitional government led by Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in\nJanuary 2025 and since then has pursued broader international engagement\nand stronger cooperation with international and humanitarian\ninstitutions.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Anadolu<\/p>\n<p>Translator: Cindy Frishanti Octavia<\/p>",
