PT Syngenta Indonesia has launched an insecticide innovation based on\nPlinazolin technology to assist farmers in controlling thrips attacks on\nchilli plants. Fauzi Tubat, National Sales Head of Syngenta Indonesia,\nstated that horticultural farmers face various challenges that can\naffect productivity.<\/p>\n
\u201cHorticultural farmers, including those growing chillies, face three\nmain challenges: drought, uncertain commodity prices, and pests and\ndiseases that affect production,\u201d he said in a statement in Jakarta on\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
To address pests and diseases, he added, efforts can be made through\nthe use of appropriate plant protection products. Thrips are a type of\nagricultural pest consisting of very small, slender insects.<\/p>\n
According to him, chilli is an important horticultural commodity with\nhigh market demand and significant economic value. However, the\nproductivity and harvest quality of chillies can face various\nchallenges, ranging from weather conditions to attacks by plant pests\n(OPT), including thrips.<\/p>\n
These challenges become even more relevant when environmental\nconditions support the development of pest populations. The El Ni\u00f1o\nphenomenon, for instance, can cause the dry season to arrive earlier and\nlast longer, potentially increasing pest pressure on crops.<\/p>\n
\u201cSupport from appropriate plant protection technology, including the\ncontrol of \u2018thrips\u2019, is one of the important factors in helping to\nmaintain productivity and harvest quality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Effective thrips control can help chilli plants grow healthier,\nparticularly in the shoots, leaves, flowers, and fruit. With more\ncontrolled thrips pressure, plants can have healthier shoots, leaves\nwith less wrinkling or curling, and brighter flowers that do not drop\neasily.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, these conditions can help reduce the risk of deformed\nchilli fruit and maintain harvest quality. Therefore, he continued, the\ncompany launched the Simodis insecticide technology in Jember Regency,\nEast Java, to assist farmers in controlling thrips and maintaining\nchilli productivity and quality.<\/p>\n
Jember was chosen as the launch location because it is one of the\nchilli production centres in East Java. According to data from the\nIndonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), chilli production in\nJember Regency reached 176,234 quintals throughout 2024.<\/p>\n
Fauzi added that, in addition to expanding education regarding thrips\ncontrol, the launch event provides an opportunity for more farmers to\nrecognise and try plant protection technology directly.<\/p>\n
Local chilli farmer Arif Saifur Rohman stated that using this\ntechnology to control thrips attacks has resulted in his chilli plants\nbeing well-maintained, from the shoots and leaves to the flowers.<\/p>\n
\u201cHarvests have increased and fruit quality is better.
