The Indonesian government is continuously pushing for the\nacceleration of food self-sufficiency as one of the efforts to\nstrengthen national food security. Various programmes are being\nimplemented to increase agricultural productivity, ranging from the use\nof agricultural technology, land optimisation, to strengthening the role\nof farmers and agricultural institutions in the regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe President has tasked us to achieve food self-sufficiency as\nquickly as possible. We are preparing a collective leap forward to make\nit happen, ensuring prosperous farmers and a smiling society,\u201d said\nAgriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman, quoted from his official statement\non Friday (17\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
Several steps are being taken by the government to boost agricultural\nproduction, including the procurement of superior seeds, pump irrigation\nprogrammes on rain-fed lands, and the construction and revitalisation of\nirrigation infrastructure. Agricultural transformation is also being\ndriven through mechanisation and the application of technologies such as\nprecision agriculture and smart farming to enhance cost efficiency and\nproductivity.<\/p>\n
These efforts are reflected in the national rice production increase\nof 4.07 million tonnes, or up 13.29% in 2025. The government\u2019s rice\nreserves (CBP) as of April 2026 also reached 4.59 million tonnes, the\nhighest in history.<\/p>\n
The national food security target is also supported by the private\nsector. One example is Harita Nickel\u2019s Sentra Ketahanan Pangan Obi\n(SENTANI) programme, which has been running since 2022.<\/p>\n
CSR Programme Development & Compliance Manager of Harita Nickel,\nMuhammad Yuda Pranata, explained that SENTANI is part of the Community\nDevelopment and Empowerment Programme (PPM) designed as a centre for\nsustainable agricultural development that provides cultivation guidance,\nsupport for facilities and infrastructure, and access to markets for\nlocal farmers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope that SENTANI can serve as a model for sustainable\nagriculture that delivers real benefits to the community. Harita Nickel\nwill continue to assist the farmers so that the results directly\ncontribute to the regional economy,\u201d said Yuda. Through this programme,\nHarita Nickel provides support to farmer groups in the form of farming\ntools, seeds, and agricultural education from upstream to downstream in\nSouth Halmahera Regency, North Maluku.<\/p>\n
A farmer from Buton Village, Obi Island, Darwan Aduhasan (33),\nrevealed that the demand for agricultural commodities is high even at\nthe local level. This indicates that the agricultural sector still has\ngreat potential for development. To boost interest among the younger\ngeneration, Darwan formed the Obi Food Sovereignty Pioneer Group\n(PELANGI) and the United Millennial Farmers Cooperative. This group\npioneers the strengthening of food sovereignty in the mining area, with\nthe main mission of changing the perception that decent work can only be\nfound in the industrial sector. \u201cThe goal is to restore the image of\nfarming as a dignified profession that can support families and fund\neducation. That is my personal inspiration,\u201d he said some time ago.<\/p>\n
The Pelangi group initially consisted of 10 members from several\nareas, such as Akegula, Buton, and Laiwui. The group then received a\nprogramme to expand agricultural land by 10.5 hectares, with potential\nup to 21 hectares, using an environmentally friendly farming approach\nwith organic fertilisers.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to express my appreciation to Harita Nickel, which has been\nactively involved in the farmer assistance programme through the\nCommunity Development and Empowerment Programme (PPM). Through this\nprogramme, we are assisted by advisors who are top graduates, including\nfrom IPB and other institutions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
For information, the SENTANI programme involves 30 active members\nconsisting of farmer groups, village-owned enterprises (BUMDes), and the\nButon Village Government. In addition to SENTANI, Harita Nickel also\nruns similar programmes to empower local communities through the\nagricultural sector.<\/p>\n
These programmes include Salam Kawasi as an integrated agricultural\nlearning centre in Kawasi Village, Kabar Mapan in Baru Village, Impresif\nin Jikatamo Village, and Obi Sehati in Obi Selatan Subdistrict.
