        "content": "<p>Synchronized swimming may be in Games<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's bid to include synchronized swimming<br>\nas a medal event in the upcoming 19th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games<br>\nhere next year received a major boost yesterday as the<br>\nInternational Swimming Body (FINA) chief Mustapha Larfaoui<br>\nrevealed his approval of the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Larfaoui said after his meeting with chairman of the National<br>\nSports Council Wismoyo Arismunandar yesterday that Southeast Asia<br>\nwas a fertile region for the new branch of swimming to grow.<\/p>\n<p>\"The region should not waste its great potential in<br>\nsynchronized swimming,\" Larfaoui said.<\/p>\n<p>Synchronized swimming made its debut as an Olympic medal event<br>\nin Barcelona in 1992, but has yet to be admitted in a smaller<br>\nevent like the SEA Games.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Swimming Federation (PRSI) introduced the new<br>\nsport as an exhibition event during the just-concluded National<br>\nGames as a preparation for the SEA Games.<\/p>\n<p>Larfaoui toured Jakarta as a guest of the Indonesian swimming<br>\nbody after observing facilities for the 2000 Olympic Games in<br>\nSydney. Both Larfaoui and Wismoyo also discussed the development<br>\nof swimming in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has been poised to include synchronized swimming in<br>\nthe SEA Games in an attempt to reduce Thailand's domination in<br>\nthe pool.<\/p>\n<p>PRSI chairman Rahardi Ramelan has guaranteed that inclusion of<br>\nthe sport would give Indonesia a great chance to win three gold<br>\nmedals in solo, duet and team events. Ramelan said Thailand,<br>\nSingapore and Malaysia were considered tough contenders.<\/p>\n<p>Larfaoui also said that he would help Indonesian swimmers<br>\nperform commendably during the SEA Games by sending experts for<br>\ncoaching clinics here.<\/p>\n<p>The Algerian-born world swimming chief hailed Indonesia's<br>\ntalents like Richard Sam Bera, Wisnu Wardhana, Catherine Surya<br>\nand Elsa Manora Nasution, but suggested that they needed good<br>\ncoaches and more competitions.
