Symposium on peace<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and
\nCultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Association of Southeast
\nAsian Nations (ASEAN) are to hold a symposium on constructing
\npeace in the region on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 here, Antara
\nreported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Delegations from Southeast Asian states, directors of defense
\nand international relations institutes from the region and
\nbeyond, youth organizations, representatives of UNESCO offices in
\nSoutheast Asia and members of the region's National UNESCO
\ncommissions will attend the symposium, the news agency quoted a
\nrelease UNESCO issued in Paris recently.<\/p>\n
UN institutions like the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the
\nInternational Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the
\nInternational Monetary Fund (IMF), the UN Development Program
\n(UNDP), the UN Children's Fund (Unicef), and the World Health
\nOrganization (WHO) will also be represented.<\/p>\n
The release said that during the symposium, participants would
\nbe expected to adopt a "Declaration on Peace for the 3rd
\nMillennium in Southeast Asia" while UNESCO and ASEAN are expected
\nto sign a cooperation agreement.<\/p>\n
Linking durable peace and sustainable development, the
\ndeclaration will commit its signatories to promote cooperation
\nwith a view to fostering a culture of peace and secure regional
\ndevelopment, the release added.<\/p>\n
President B.J. Habibie is scheduled to open the symposium,
\nwhile ASEAN secretary-general, Rodolfo C. Severino Jr., and
\nUNESCO director general, Federico Mayor, will address the event.<\/p>\n
The symposium is slated to hold a discussion, a presentation
\nand workshops.<\/p>",
