Syafruddin murder suspect arrested<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): Police have arrested a man suspected of
\nkilling Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin, a journalist of the Bernas
\ndaily, in August.<\/p>\n
The suspect, identified as Kiwik, was arrested Monday in the
\nvicinity of Sleman regency, 14 kilometers north of here. Police
\nalso seized a 35-centimeter iron bar from the suspect that he
\nallegedly used to beat Fuad, better-known as Udin, to death with,
\na long-sleeve T-shirt, a pair of sneakers and a blue scooter.<\/p>\n
One of Kiwik's police-appointed lawyers, Triandi Mulkan, told
\nreporters here yesterday that his client had admitted to killing
\nUdin, but claimed that he did not do it intentionally.<\/p>\n
\"He told the police he initially only wanted to warn Udin,\"
\nTriandi said. He did not elaborate, however.<\/p>\n
Udin, 35, died after an unknown group of people attacked him
\nin his home in Bantul, Yogyakarta on Aug. 13. It is strongly
\nsuspected that Udin's death was brought about because of his
\ncritical reporting on certain people.<\/p>\n
Kiwik's wife, Suwarti, reportedly called the newspaper's
\noffice Monday afternoon to tell the daily that the police had
\narrested her husband on charges of killing Udin.<\/p>\n
The information of the arrest instantly drew dozens of
\nreporters to the Yogyakarta police headquarters in search of
\nconfirmation. Yogyakarta Police Chief Mulyono Sulaiman declined
\nto comment.<\/p>\n
According to Triandi, his client had been interrogated twice
\nby the police. During the first round of questioning, when he was
\nnot accompanied by a lawyer, Kiwik reportedly admitted to the
\ncrime and claimed he committed it out of jealousy over a woman.<\/p>\n
During the second interrogation, in front of his three
\nlawyers, Kiwik reportedly \"looked unstable\" and could not explain
\nwhy he had killed Udin, Triandi said.<\/p>\n
The questioning session was then halted, he said.<\/p>\n
Triandi and many reporters said Kiwik's face did not match the
\none reconstructed from witnesses and sketched by a Yoyakarta
\nartist shortly after the journalist's murder.<\/p>\n
Kiwik's wife, Suwarti, who attended the same senior high
\nschool as Udin, works as a dressmaker and a hairdresser. She
\nreportedly had not seen Udin for a long time. (30\/26)<\/p>",
