Swiss man accused of pedophilia in RI<\/p>\n
GENEVA (Reuters): Police in Switzerland said on Wednesday that
\na Swiss man had been detained in a suspected pedophile case
\ninvolving abuse of children in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
A police statement said the man, in his 40s and from the
\nFrench-speaking canton of Vaud, had been placed under preventive
\ndetention for alleged sexual offenses against young boys in
\nIndonesia from 1991 to 1997.<\/p>\n
The man had denied the charges, the statement said.<\/p>\n
Swiss police were collaborating with Indonesian authorities in
\nthe case, which involved children aged between five and 15.<\/p>\n
Police said they were alerted in April after customs officials
\nseized magazines, addressed to the man, containing pedophile
\nphotographs of young boys.<\/p>\n
An ensuing police search at his house uncovered evidence of
\npedophile acts abroad by the man, the statement said.<\/p>\n
The suspect had previously been convicted on three counts of
\nabuse against children in the early 1980s. No date has been set
\nfor a trial on the new charges.<\/p>\n
Under Swiss law, a person who has committed a crime in another
\ncountry can be prosecuted for it back home. Sexual offenses
\nagainst minors by Swiss people abroad have been punishable in
\nSwitzerland since 1992.<\/p>\n
Sex abuse carries a maximum sentence of seven years in
\nSwitzerland.<\/p>",
