Sutiyoso's policy on beggars<\/p>\n

This newspaper reported in its Nov. 5 issue that Jakarta
\nGovernor Sutiyoso has ordered the head of the Public Order Office
\nto arrest the organizers of some 3,000 beggars and tramps
\nplanning to enter Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The newspaper also quoted Sutiyoso as saying that he knew some
\npeople were organizing the entry of these 3,000 beggars and
\ntramps and that he had ordered his men to arrest these organizers
\nbecause he believed that the people of Jakarta did not wish to
\nsee an influx of beggars and tramps organized from outside
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The question is whether or not arrests have been made,
\nespecially given that the governor said he knew who these
\norganizers were.<\/p>\n
In reality, beggars and tramps have increased in number in
\nJakarta, especially at traffic lights.<\/p>\n
I recently saw a woman beggar carrying a disabled child at
\nKota Railway Station. This could obviously make people think of
\nthe exploitation of human beings. Perhaps readers could suggest
\nways to end this way of earning money.<\/p>\n
